From gigantic mainframes, to mini computers, to personal computers, to notebooks, to smartphones. The IT industry has been getting smaller and smaller (in device form factor). One would think that the next craze in the computing industry would come in the form of a device smaller than a smartphone. However, in 2008, low cost netbook became the craze in the market.

Low cost netbooks. They are small. They are light. They are cheap. They function just like a notebook. They are the solution to serve the area between the bulky notebooks and tiny smartphones. They are the talk of the town right now. They have become the Best Small Laptops.

Lets take a peek at the 5 points that made netbooks the success they are right now.

1. Light in Size
Netbooks are sized in the range of 9″ – 12″ laptops. As such, they have a very sleek form factor. These small devices are also built to be catchy to the eye of the users. Vendors are putting a lot of effort in designing the netbooks to look cute.

Being cute certainly have a lot of advantage in ensuring the success of these low cost netbooks in the market. People like cute. They are easily attracted to small and cute things.

2. Light in Weight
Netbooks are not only small and cute. They are also very lightweight. As a matter of fact, they they are like feather weight if compared to traditional notebooks.

Almost all netbooks in the market today weight less than 2kg. The light weight feature of netbooks certainly makes them a favorite for all frequent travelers. People who carries their notebook around everyday will certainly benefit from the lightweightness of these netbooks.

I can certainly foresee more people getting the netbook just because of the weight alone. It surely beats having to carry around a heavy notebook every single day. Netbooks will certainly remove a lot of burden from the shoulders of current notebook users.

3. Light in Price
What can I say? How can you say no to a notebook that costs under USD600? The wonderful pricing of these netbooks is surely among the most prominent reasons for its success today.

The sub USD600 pricing simply means that users will not have to think twice to purchase it. It also means that more people can afford one too.

4. Light in Functions
Powered by the Intel Atom processor certainly has its pros and cons. On the plus side, the Intel Atom CPU allows these netbooks to perform all normal notebook pc functions. It also runs on very low energy, thus allowing far longer battery life.

On the other hand, the Intel Atom is by no means comparable to its Centrino cousins. As such, you don’t get the processing power of a normal notebook. However, it is still powerful enough for normal work. Internet browsers, eMails, wordprocessors, and basic photo editors works just fine on the netbooks.

Any functions heavier than the above mentioned should not be performed on the netbooks. It will probably run. You would just have to wait a while for it to complete. But if you really have time to waste, go ahead. Render that 3D image of yours on the netbook.

5. Right Timing
For quite a while now, users have been waiting for the computer industry to come out with a device that bridges the gap between smartphones and notebooks. The last product which tried to bridge the gap and failed was the Ultra Mobile Portable Computer (UMPC) range of devices.

These low cost netbooks serve this market segment well. With the above mentioned features and functions, the netbooks are looking to fill in this gap successfuly.

Size, weight, price, functions and timing. Those are the 5 criteria of success for the low cost netbooks. What started as a product offered by only a single vendor, netbooks have attracted almost all major players in the IT industry. ASUS was the first to offer netbooks to the public with their Eee range of products.

Today, HP, Dell, and Lenovo have joined the bandwagon with a number of products. Even Microsoft have joined by lowering the cost of their Windows XP for the netbooks. How will the netbooks fare in the coming future? Will Apple join in the fray and come out with a netbook of their own? Only time will tell. For now, I’m thinking of getting my hands on the Lenovo S10 myself. What about you?
