Small laptops, mini notebooks, ultra mobile portable computers, netbooks or whatever you want to call them. They are the craze at the moment. Some say it’s the best thing that ever happened to the computing industry. Others think differently.

No matter what the experts say, the market is certainly showing a lot of interest in these new small laptops we’ve grown to call netbooks. Yes, many experts are baffled at the growth they are seeing in the netbook market. What is it that makes netbooks so successful? In other words, why a netbook?

Size

The mini notebooks, being small and portable, are perfectly built for travelling.  Their diminutive size makes them easier to carry than their larger brethren. You can basically just slot them into any small backpacks or handbags.

They are also lightweight in comparison and this has helped in making them accepted in the market more quickly. There is also a general consensus that netbooks are seen as being “cute” due to their small size. People like small cute phones, small cute dogs etc. and now small cute laptops too.

Weight

Another trait of these new little notebooks is its weight. Normal notebooks are known to be rather heavy.  I know for I’ve been carrying one around for the last couple of years. Netbooks, weighing in at just about 1.5kg will not be a burden to most people. Ladies, especially, will surely appreciate the lighter load.

Battery Life

For the most part, the one major complaint about notebooks I’ve heard is on battery life. Most full sized notebooks can only run for at most 3 to four hours from a single charge. As a result, you’ve got to carry the AC adapter with you, always.

Netbooks, thus, allow you to fully charge the unit in the morning and then work with it through out the day. You can basically just leave the adapter at home.  Unless you plan to work for much more than 8 hours. You will, of course, need to have a netbook with a 6 cells battery to last more than 6 hours.

Performance

Most netbooks today are powered by the Intel Atom processor. Iit may not give you the power of a full sized notebook. However, it is, to an extent, powerful enough to run all your normal software. Software in the likes of wordprocessors, spreadsheets and simple imaging will all run comfortably well in a netbook.

Highly graphical games will probably need to be played in lower graphics mode, if possible. Netbooks, at the moment, are not equipped with high graphics video capability.

If you are into music or need great audio when playing games, then the built in speakers may not be up to your taste. An external speakers or headphones should probably give you more juice.

All in all, in terms of performance, there’s really not much that this mini notebooks cannot do when compared to a regular notebook.  You can pretty much do everything you would normally do on a laptop.

Just don’t expect it to be able to render a full feature movie or run a server like process. Leave those jobs to a better configured servers please.

Price

These mini portables give you value for your dollars.  They are now priced at somewhere between $299 – $600 depending on the configuration of the unit. The price range of these new devices make them very affordable to the mass market.

Why fork out $1000+ for a notebook when you can get one for way cheaper? Unless you really need a portable power house of a notebook, then a cute little netbook would be the better buy.

Style

Cute and trendy. That’s what people like. Well, these sweet little squarish devices are just that. They have the looks. They are small and light enough to hold in your arms. You don’t look nerdy when using them.

Today, you can even skin them. Just like you skin your tiny phones, netbook skins are now easily found. You can even have your own custom skins made for you.

The Web

The Internet have also been a major factor in building up the success of netbooks. Today, you can basically run most day to day chores on the Internet. You can write documents, create spreadsheets and make presentations using web applications that runs on your browser.

Google, ThinkFree and Zoho provide office suites which you can use directly on the web. They are free too.

Seriously, if you are considering to buy a new notebook, give these new small laptops a look. Their size, weight, performance, battery life, price and trendiness will certainly meet your needs. Today we are seeing more desktop applications being ported into the web. Pretty soon, there will not be any need to install so many applications into your netbook.

The time is definitely right for Netbooks to shine. Take a peek at the many low cost netbook options you have from the Best Priced Small Laptops available.
