Yes, but…
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Physically, a nice little machine, great for work on the go. I have fairly big fingers, and made a lot of typos at first, but my hands got accustomed to the keyboard within an hour or so. But there are buts.
The big one is that, while it does a few things faster than my main Vista-based laptop, for many of the most basic maneuvers it’s a slow as molasses and crashes regularly, even though I’ve doubled the memory to its maximum 2gb. My hunch is that Windows 7, which the 1001p comes with, is another bust from Microsoft, so loaded down with security and other features of no use to anyone that it needs a nuclear power plant to run it. You can go for a 5-mile run between hitting the scroll bar and the page actually scrolling down!
Soon as I’m back from my current trip and not dependent on this netbook, I’m going to try replacing 7 with xp and see if that improves things.
Asus Netbook

Tha netbook performs pretty good. The shipping was very fast, I got my computer in 4 days.
Great little netbook
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I ordered this netbook as a web and e-mail browser, it works great. I am very satisfied and more than happy with the battery-life. I am getting one for my Mom who is totally tech-impaired but she is fine with this netbook, when she comes over she has used it several times and found it very managable. Great product, very much recommended.
Nice netbook with a nice price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my 1st netbook, I got the blue version of this Asus, and I guess it was a mistake because the glossy finished is magnetic to the fingers prints… Also I couldn’t get the 11 hrs battery, I got 8 to 9 hrs, and I guess it is enough for me I don’t need more. The keyboard is comfortable and the multitouch in the mouse track pad is handy. I upgraded its RAM to 2 GB so I can get the maximum response. I recommend this netbook for anyone looking for cheap good netbook.
Overall, a decent purchase
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Wife and I bought the Asus Eee PC 1001P-MY17-BK primarily to use as an on-the-road word processor and internet connection for when we do customer service evaluations at various businesses. We bought it in April 2010 and it is now August. It has worked very well for this purpose. It’s size is excellent for slipping into brief cases and overnight bags, and it has generally been easy to connect when network service has been available.
I chose this one primarily because at the time it was at the low end of the price range, had at least a four-star Amazon rating from a large number of people, it had a fairly large hard drive, and had the longest advertised battery life. I didn’t really think it would get 11 hours on a charge (and it hasn’t) but it does last for several hours, especially if work is done in short segments. One might get close to 9 or 10 hours if it is left on with no processing being done, but if there is steady word processing, the remaining battery life decreases. If one plays any videos or music, the remaining battery life spins down quite quickly.
As far as usability, it has worked quite well. Screen is easy to read, Windows 7 starter is adequate for what we do, and we have succesfully added the software we needed without difficulty (primarily Windows Office and Dropbox). My wife (who is the primary user) finds the 92% keyboard and scratch pad quite workable. I find it OK for internet cruising, but difficult to use for extended typing. Altho my hands are not all that large, I seem to hit unintended keys, and it seems easy for my thumbs to contact the scratch pad, which sends the cursor flying across the screen. More than a couple times I have erased entire just-typed paragraphs because my thumb apparently dragged (thus selecting a large amount of text) and the next entered letter wiped everything out. This is frustrating for me, but as I said, my wife says it works OK for her.
We treat if fairly gingerly, because it does not seem to be ruggedly constructed. The flat surfaces and the keyboard bend under light finger pressure. Nothing has given way, but we are careful not to put it to the test.
Prior to buying it I read some reviews citing the wall adaptor power supplies as a problem area. When I first got it, I did attempt to simultaneously use the machine while it was charging. The adaptor became very hot, and the machine appeared to stop charging. I shut it down, let everything cool, and tried again from a different outlet. Same thing. Since then we have not tried to use the machine while plugged into the wall — we let it charge up, then unplug it and use it. Then shut down and recharge. The power adaptor has stayed reasonably cool and has continued working.
One other quirk. We have a digital voice recorder with a USB plug built into it. When I plugged it into the notebook, it immediately powered the machine off, and I mean instantly. Took it out, powered up, tried again. Same thing. I realize now I have not tried any other USB items on it, so I don’t know if it was the recorder or the notebook (or maybe those two just do not work together).
Overall we are pretty satisfied with it, and it was a worthwhile buy for us.
power problem
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this computer for my daughter five weeks ago. Up until now it has been a good unit. However, yesterday it failed to charge. The battery has only 4% power and we are sending it to Asus for repair. Not sure if it is a power cord or motherboard issue. Hopefully it will be fixed quickly.
Shipped with Windows 7 Starter, not XP as specified
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This machine is great, and just what I wanted. The big kicker, however, is that instead of the Windows XP Home Edition listed in the specifications, it shipped with the totally unacceptable Windows 7 Starter Edition. The Windows 7 Starter Edition appears to have one and only purpose; to coerce users into buying an upgrade. This is unacceptable.
1001p Blue

Works great out of the box, and i was surprised at how well it did with 1Gb ram. I had also ordered a Crucial 2GB stick as recommended by Crucial, and that’s when the problems began. The door has one screw that has a back on it, to keep it from coming completely out. You have to unscrew it until you hear it popping, and seem to be stripping, and then just go on and Pry the door off. (Would have been nice to know.) After installing the 2GB stick, i noticed several problems, the first thing that happened was the screen froze- corrupted- went crazy- what ever you want to call it, when i plugged the power cord in while using the computer. Only way to make it stop was to power down, then back up. You can unplug the cord while using it, but not plug it in. Screen messed up every time. An updated graphics driver from the Asus site took care of this, yay! However, there were other probs with shutdown and sleep. Whenever the computer needed to restart after an update – and there were many, It would not restart. The screen goes black, but drive never powers back up. Again, only way to get it back was to power down and up. Then would usually get some version of “Windows was not properly shut Down” or “Which Operating system do you want to load? ” or “your last browsing session was interrupted” etc and so forth. Also, would see the message that “Boot Booster does not work” as the Bios flashed by, even tho i had gone into the Bios, disabled it, the enabled it while i saved the 2GB ram as instructed. I repeated this process many times. Boot Booster never works. Asus recommendation is to flash the Bios. And i could- maybe- do that. It might work. But then again, i read an awful lot of forum cries for help when that does not work and it wont reboot at all! I could also just stick the 1GB back in there that worked fine, and return the 2GB crucial. I think that is what i am going to do. I have already spent Way Too much time on this, and it’s still buggy. I only wanted to see the inside of this computer once, and the bios never. I’ve gotten way too familiar with both.
Excellent 10″ Netbook
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’m very happy with my recent purchase of the ASUS 10″ netbook. I like that its very portable and has great features – webcam, built in mic, skype, etc. I’ve been able to download several games and other tools without effecting performance. I did have the geek sqaud optimize and add Microsoft virus protection which was an additional $60 but I saved money buying the netbook through Amazon. I had not heard of ASUS before buying my netbook but have since read up on the brand and have read many good reviews of their products. I will look at ASUS again if/when I decide to purchase a full size laptop.
Windows 7 Starter Version ruins this machine
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
After originally really liking this Netbook, imagine my surprise that it cannot be connected to our local network running 2 XP computers and a Vista machine. You must have full blown Windows 7 to connect.
This makes this netbook very much crippled for most users. You can’t even change the wallpaper without a hack.
This one is going back so I can get one that is running XP. It’s too bad too, because this one looks nice, the keyboard is great, the battery life is great, and the setup was very easy.
Shame on Microsoft for using a crippled OS.
This is a good netbook that completes my needs – light weight and websurfing
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I go to an online college and was using a laptop for this. I was getting tired of how heavy it is, bulky and HOT, oh, so dang hot! I asked a few people what their thoughts were on getting a netbook and got several different opinions (don’t get this brand, get an iPad [for my school?? what??], don’t get a netbook at all). I got two opinions which was to get this netbook. I only need it for school and for email. I want to be able to take it with me to where ever I want to go without carrying 50 pound laptop [exaggerating]. Of course some people still think online college isn’t a real college… ugh.
The keyboard is nice. I found that the small reduction in percentage is not that big of a deal. My husband hates it, saying it’s way too small for him… yet, he still uses it. Hmmm.
Start up was good. However, I did have issues with it networking to my router. I reduced security on the router a tad after so many troubleshooting efforts failed. That worked! I’m not a networking expert, though I do have some knowledge. It took me two days to figure that out.
Battery life hasn’t been an issue. It goes all day from morning until I go to sleep. I plug it in right before bed and it gets about 8 hours of uninteruppted charge, which is good for the battery.
I find that it is a little slower than my laptop. I posted one of the gagets of RAM usage on my desktop to see about what it uses in physical memory, seems it stays around 47%. I try not to open too many applications for it to go any slower. I will look at upgrading the RAM here in a few months. I’m not really complaining since I knew what it came with, so I am just adding to discussion.
I found it pretty cheap at Walmart. I also did quite a bit of research on other comparable units made by different manufacturers. HP/Dell/Sony… the list goes on. They were way overpriced! This was very reasonable for what it does, plus I get a deduction on my taxes for being a student purchasing an item that is used for my studies. It is a win-win.
One little gripe is the Microsoft key is not working out for me. I am going to do a fix on this and see how that turns out. Lucky for me, my sister is an AF communications airman… so she can help out with me on this.
All-in-all, I am happy with this purchase and would love to give it 4.5 stars.
first day impressions
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Just received this computer yesterday (amazon shipped it a day early) I am typing on it right now, and i absolutely love this computer.
the keyboard seems to “hit” just right. this is a huge leap from my 17″ dell that I used to carry, that got a whopping 1 hr of battery life(currently asus is reading 7 hrs remaining, after I’ve used it intensely for 1)
great to carry around, very lightweight. connects to internet effortlessly.
one thing to be ready for, is once u start it, don’t be ready to use it right off the bat, took about 30 minutes or so to load all updates, and be ready to go.
I researched this product for about 6 months before I chose this one, for price, and fit and feel.thus far, it is definitely worth the money.
plus anyone worried about the keyboard, even me going from a everyday full size keyboard, i have had about as many errors with this keyboard as i would normally.
pretty good netbook, but windows 7 is slow
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I ordered the white one with windows xp, but it came with winows 7; I just didn’t bother returning it. I’ve used it for about a month and added a 2g ram.
pros: easy to carry
long battery life
non-glare screen
windows 7 is quite stable
cons: cpu is so slow
windows 7 is retarded
works ok with simle tasks
2g ram doesn’t improve that much
I only use it at school for essays; this is great for me because of its light weight and long battery life.
Not a strong Unit, processor is terrible
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this unit last month.
The processor is slow and freeze/not responding often times. I was told that netbook is not strong enough to hold Windows 7. My computer status shows 2.3 rating for Processor performance.
The Windows 7 starter package is also horrible. Missing some features that are pretty standard and often used in vista or xp. For example you can’t change the desktop background picture. You can’t right click a picture to select it as a background.
Wifi connection is also slow to start with. It takes over 30 seconds for it to find my own wifi at home. My regular Dell laptop would connect instantly when I turn it on.
I have had this netbook returned to ASUS Service Center for thme to reinstall the OS also to repair the SD slot that was broken the first time I opened the box. They were pretty fast and responsive but still the unit came back with the same processing speed which is disappointing.
I would not recommend getting a netbook with Windows 7.
2 star for its beautiful look only.
great computer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great little computer, it has a great battery life and easy to transport. Great for surfing the internet and sleek style.
I think it’s an awesome value for a Win7 starter netbook.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First note – this run Win7 starter edition. That means you can’t change the desktop backdrop. Second note: the large mac-like button really is two different buttons – pressing in the center does absolutely nothing, while pressing on the left or the right behaves as expected. if there was any visual indication to split the button, I’d have wasted less time clicking in the center wondering why it was unresponsive.
Those quibbles aside – you get what you expect, a small keyboard that nevertheless has a nice response, a trackpad that works smoothly, flash video playback, skype, etc.
And it works. Reliably.
Great netbook
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this four months ago after creating a spreadsheet comparing about twenty different models and deciding that this was the best for the money at the time. Two of my friends (who aren’t as enthusiastic about researching products to buy) ordered the same one within the next two months. So far we’ve all been happy and no one has had any issues.
Based on some reviews I was concerned about it playing videos without being jerky, but it’s worked great. I did order 2 GB of memory with it, so I don’t know if that matters.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I LOVE THIS NETBOOK! The size and weight are great for travel, the keyboard is a good size and it works wonderfully!
Volume is extremly low
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I am very much disappointed that I have to give up on waching CNN and other internet videos because the volume from the built-in speaker is very low. I am told by Asus that I need to buy an external speaker. I like to know if others have the same problem, or anyone could tell me how to resolve it without buying an external skeaker.
A traveling machine.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This was ordered for my sister who just needed something capable of general e mailing, web browsing etc when away from the home PC. For the price, size and capabilities it has answered her needs. She has had to teach herself key board commands and fathom more than she thought on usage but it seems the ‘Help’ button is informative. Seems the manual on the ‘how to’s’ isn’t so helpful. WiFi worked right off the bat and there hasn’t been an issue with browsing speed. She’s not naturally a technical minded person but feels she’s done well. The size would seem ideal for those that fly and want to travel light. I should add it came recommended from a computer science degree son who had researched netbooks for price and content.
battery only good for 5 hours when playing mpeg2 video
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
i was hoping to reach 6 hours or even 8 hours video playing but it stops at 5 hours on one charge, note it’s for mpeg2 video decoding which most cpu can handle well(mpeg4/h.264 is more cpu intensive and power hungry). i need this for long international trip(kids to kill time on the plane), a little disappointed as my existing 15″ laptop can do 3.5 hours already, netbook does not buy much as far as battery-time is concerned in my case.
Love my ASUS netbook!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Purchased this to use in the field when I am working for its size and battery life. Tried it out last week and it worked great. I think I need to add more memory to speed it up. The battery life was what everyone said – I had on for 8 hours a day on battery and it still had plenty left. I am happy I got it!
Very good overall, keyboard key gets stuck (ordered a replacement)
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
A very good machine. Very cute design, ergonomic keyboard. Slow as hell – it’s not the product’s drawback, but the platforms overall. I’m definitely going to get 2G of memory, otherwise there is disk activity all the time that slows down the machine. Haven’t been able to achieve good video performance – low fps, spotty – tried in all browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome). Installed Windows 7 64-bit on it just for fun – supposedly besides addressing 4G+ of memory (which is not applicable) it also manages the memory better. After only 3 weeks of use the Escape key gets stuck for no reason (no spill, nothing) – ordered a replacement.
almost perfect..
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
pros:
- sleek look; good sized k’board/batt unit
- textured finish = virtually no more grease prints
- easy upgrade to 2gb
- amazing batt life when charged/discharged correctly
- asus’ SHE & express gate
- touch pad includes iphone’s/itouch’s pinching capability
- cost-effective
cons:
- glossy screen casing, creating potential greasy spots
- touch pad buttons are always stiff
- upgrading w/SODIMM voids warranty
to get the best out of the 1001p:
- initial charge for 8-10 hrs, then let drain & repeat for at least 2-3x
- keep under power saver mode & stay on default settings to optimally charge batt
- upgrade to 2gb capacity, especially if staying w/ W7 starter
- install mycolors if you want to change wallpaper aesthetics [...]
add’l notes:
W7 starter is as basic an OS as there is out there. only personal pref’s & usage requirements can be used to rate said OS. those oh-so-many who are opposed to it might very well be expecting too much out of a mere netbook. it’s 289.99-300 USD, for gigabyte’s sake.

Great value netbook. Asus developed the netbook . We started with their triple ‘e’ 7″ a few years ago. That served its purpose very well; a easy to use web machine to be used by my wife in the family room. Virtually no memory and the Linux operating system was a very good entre into netbooks. That little computer got a ton of use by everyone in the family. Alas, its time drew to an end as the limited memory and the inability to upgrade the operting system plus the small screen finally became too much to bear. Then along comes the Asus 1001. Addresses all the issues, and everyone is delighted. It has a nice shell. Overall fit and finish is generally good, though there are a few minor fit issues. Nothing major. It’s Windows. Enough said. Linux was a lot easier to run and maintain, but what are you going to do? For a few bucks under $300 it is a great value, and if you are looking for a light, inobtrusive, general use web machine, it really hits a home run.
junk

This machine is a piece of junk.. spend the money and get a better machine..It’s slow. It will not play itunes properly..I have spent hours days weeks trying to get this thing to work. Waste of time and money. I am leaving this review from my home pc becfause my Asus eee PC is too slow and I have a powerful router in my home.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The netbook comes at a cheap price, but it isn’t a cheap product! Sure you may have heard about so many netbooks with many flaws, but this one has minor flaws, which, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t bad at all.
The keyboard feels just right, the webcame is crystal clear, the only thing I still havent been able to figure out is that whenever I record a video i have no audio, but I’m sure there’s something I’m missing and havent figured it out yet.
The screen isnt glossy, it hardly reflects any light at all and is easy on the eyes.
Overall, if you need this for internety type of things (I know thats not a word), then I highly recommend this product. It comes at a great price (I got it for 281), especially for how great of a computer it is.
