Great Product When it Works– Bad Customer Service
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-P on September 30th. For the first 3 weeks everything worked perfectly. I did have to adjust to the smaller screen size, especially when using programs with multiple toolbars-a bit of trimming and “F11″ took care of that.

The unit, while exponentially quicker than my “old” 2007 DELL Inspiron 1505 (YUCKYUCKYUCK!!) is still a bit slower than I had hoped. I have not yet upgraded the RAM from 1G to 2G so I cannot complain too much about that a this point. My suggestion, keep your software incredibly light! My biggest installations were AVG (which I’m considering downgrading to something a bit skinnier)and Open Office. I wish they wouldn’t even install Works anymore, waste of space.

I adjusted to the *slightly* smaller keyboard in approximately 2.5 minutes and the seamless touchpad is far superior to any other netbook I’ve seen/used. Scrolling is a bit irritating but I usually just us the up/down arrows for that anyway.

OHHHHHHH! Speaking of the keyboard/touchpad, at about the three week mark, my keyboard & touchpad froze up on me and would only recover after a hard reboot. NOT a good sign but my avoidance tendency shoved this little red flag to the back of my mind. Everything was just peachy until tuesday, 2 months & 2 weeks after it was purchased. The bloody keyboard locked up again and this time took the liberty of rebooting on it’s own! Upon restarting the touchpad did not work at all.

I reinstalled the synaptics driver twice from ASUS’ website (what a terribly designed website by the way!) and still nothing! I did 2 system restores (I was just trying anything at that point) and nothing. Pressing the touchpad hotkey merely yields an ACPI error message. Since it’s been more than 30 days I skipped Amazon and went straight to ASUS customer service after obtaining a case number from the support website.

The first call went swimmingly, the rep was very nice but suggested I do a system recovery. Any time they tell me to, essential, “turn it off and turn it back on” it worries me just a bit because it doesn’t actually fix the issue. But like a good little girl I jumped through their hoops. After the recovery (surprise, surprise) the touchpad still didn’t work. I called customer service back and this rep laughed at me (!?! Yeah I took that REAL well) and said I had to reboot the computer (again) in order for the “recovery to be complete.” Okay, I’m just a stupid girl, what do I know? I rebooted the sucker. Nada. I called back, because the 2nd rep couldn’t be troubled to wait on the line for me to reboot the computer. This time the (3rd) rep I got was absolutely horrible. She barely let me get through my explanation before she was giving me rapid-fire directions on how to reinstall the driver. Of course I already knew how to install the driver (because I’d already done it!) but the speed of the directions she was throwing at me just grated on me, an already irritated customer. I tried to explain I’d already done this twice and it didn’t fix the problem but, hey I’m just a customer. This rep also could not be troubled to stay on the line with me while I rebooted but I was so irritated at her that I was the one who hung up.

Of course this didn’t fix the problem and so I called back (4th call to ASUS) and got Rep #2 (the laugher) and she finally gave me an RMA so I could send the unit back to them to repair. Of course I have to pay for shipping their defective machine back to them, but in 2009 who still expects good customer service anyway?

Overall, a good product–when you don’t get a defective unit. If you happen to be one of the few unlucky ones who do, strap in and prepare for a miserable experience.

    Surprisingly fast for a netbook
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
    Pros:

    Well built, light, fast

Camera, Mic, Speaker, Bluetooth 2.1, Wifi-N (135 Mbps). Has everything one requires for a travel except for GPS!!!

    Cons:

Win XP, could’ve been Win 7 starter edition.

The mouse pad & buttons require some learning.

1 GB Ram only. It’s like the camera manufacturers shipping a free 16MB SD card.

For a very little cost +$10, Asus could have shipped with 2GB RAM.

    Very classy.

    Very logical…

    Love the purchase.

Used it right away…installing fav stuff.

    Nice….

24 hours into charging NADA… stuck at 35%.

    Oh-oh.

    Called Asus.

Friendly people open 24/7. Like that.

Tried a 24 hr. hard reset.

    Nope no change.

    Called again…explained situation.

    No problem…need a different battery.

    Okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. Please send it.

Won’t send battery without fax letter of agreement…plus must pay shipping.

If we don’t get fax no battery.

Not happy putting card number on fax WITH signature.

    No options.

    Asked for supervisor.

    Still no options.

    Breathing deeply…

When you send the fax you are supposed to receive verification.

24 hours later still no verification.

    Called again.

    15 minutes looking for fax.

    Yep, got it.

    When might the battery arrive.

Next week…MAYBE midweek. MAYBE end of the week.

    WOT?

Explained: my fault because I didn’t choose overnight….wtf.

Battery is width of 10 pencils…light….HOW MUCH SHIPPING???

    Going psycho.

Left Dell Hell for Asus Asylum…

These are the days of our lives.

Will update when battery arrives in a few weeks…or whenever.

    2 broken units, >2-week RMA
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
    Beware.

The first one I bought had hard drive failure out of the box (click of death). I exchanged it that day at the store where I bought it so it only cost a few hours of hassle. Six weeks later the power supply on the replacement failed while I was traveling on business. No laptop…

I submitted my RMA to ASUS on 12/1/2009 for replacement including paying them for the privilege of having it shipped 2-day. As of 12/14/2009 it has not been shipped, and the tech support staff cannot provide a date when it will be shipped. They refuse to RMA the entire unit since only the power supply is broken.

Bottom line – this netbook is cool, but extremely likely to leave you high and dry.

I decided to go with the ASUS Eee PC , because they basically started this whole netbook class on their own. The LED display along with the available resolutions the screen supports makes it easy to read web pages and write for my blog. I will be upgrading to 2GB RAM soon, but for now the 1GB that comes with it runs everything I need perfectly(Mozilla Firefox, Itunes, Open Office, Skype)After reading all the negative reviews I am worried that my charger will fail me and I wont be able to use my computer (since its my primary) but fingers crossed for that not happening to me. I did overnight delivery and Amazon did a great job of sticking to the time it promised. On my 3rd day with this thing and I’m loving it!

I absolutely love this netbook. I thought I’d end up facing many of the problems that other people have posted, but I haven’t. The one thing about this laptop I do not like is how slowly it runs when downloading or installing. Otherwise, I can run multiple Internet Explorer windows, Skype with the video and mic on, videos, music and games all at once. I definitely recommend this computer to people who are looking to buy a netbook.

I bought this netbook for my work along with an external DVD drive from Asus. I wanted to make a partition on its hard drive and install Linux to have a dual boot option. But unfortunately it was not letting me install Linux on the machine. I used the same external DVD player to install Linux on my other laptop, and it worked. So clearly there was some problem with Eee PC. I called Eee PC’s customer support but they pushed this issue to their DVD department. I called customer support for Asus DVD but they said “these Eee PC guys keep on pushing their issues to us (DVD), it is actually their (Eee PC) problem”. So that wasn’t really a good experience. I called Eee PC guys again but they could not figure out what was going on. Just to make sure it was not a processor issue, I used the same setup to install Linux on Acer Aspire netbook and to my surprise it did work on that. So I don’t know if it is a hardware problem or something like that, but I am just going to return this netbook and buy the one from Acer. I do not know how good it is with windows, since I used it only for a day. But appearance and form factor wise it is pretty good. Light weight, easy to carry, and most importantly it has 802.11n support and built in bluetooth. So although it did not work for me with Linux, I think I should not judge its performance with original windows configuration.

The 1st 1005ha delivered was defective and Amazon exchanged ASAP.Do not count on the battery lasting 10 hrs,I think its “hype”.The 1st one had a battery problem and so does this one. However it still holds a decent charge 7-8 hrs.The rest is fine.I have 1g memory and it works fine, usually about 30 secs to get up and going, its not slow between pages and I have’vt taken all the software I wont use off.I expect it will run better after I do this.

When its all said and done I dont think its a bad deal for $350,I would’nt pay more.

Keyboard took a little to get used to. Works well overall. Charge lasts all day if you’re careful with energy management.

Great for email and checking in while on the road. The touch pad drives me batty at times and the OEM software is a little maddening at times but all in all a great little machine. I tend to push it into things it wasnt meant to do (image capture via CF card) and its doing well. Wouldnt do any serious pixel editing with it as the screen is too small.

A really nice novelty but not big on function
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I purchased this netbook to use for online college classes and doing some light web surfing in WiFi hotspots. When I first received it, I was extremely excited, but the more I played with it, the less I liked it.

The first issue with it is the screen size. It is much smaller than a normal laptop screen, and once you factor in the title bar and menu bars for the programs you are running, you are down to about 2/3 of the available screen for your application. This was manageable on most text pages, but it was impossible to play even the simplest online games without frustration.

The second issue I had was rapidly declining battery life. The first time I charged it, the battery lasted almost 12 hours. Within 2 weeks, this was down to 6; far less than what is advertised.

Another issue is the balance of the unit. When you have the screen open, it is not bottom heavy at all and tends to want to fall over backwards. I almost dropped it over the edge of a school desk this way. The balance problem is caused by the heavier battery, which is good, but it is a very annoying trade off.

In the end, I decided to return this unit and get a full sized laptop instead.

Great computer for internet surfing, but plays downaloaded videos a little choppy sometimes. one small thing that bugs me is scrolling up and down a page is also slow or choppy. The battery life is outstanding, i havent really had any bad experiences with it yet and i dont really expect to either.

I’ve had my netbook for about a month now and so far its working good. I do travel for work so it is nice to have something small to carry around. The screen size, battery life, and keyboard work well. I don’t like to be on the computer for long too long because the screen does hurt my eyes after awhile. I think somethings run a little slow and am still debating if I should upgrade the ram. Someone did recommend me using Mozilla instead of Internet Explorer because they stay it won’t get hung up as often. So I just started using that instead recently. I have the blue one and I still can see fingerprints all over it. I wish they would come up with a better material for the exterior. Overall I like it and am glad I bought this one.

I am 86 and thought this would be perfect to take when I travel so that I could check my email and use Skype to keep in contact with the family. I was very disappointed. The first day I had it, it crashed and I had to reinstall the software and all my settings. It is VERY slow. You cannot back up to a network drive as it is the Starter version on WIndows 7. Only WIndows Ultimate WILL back up to the drive. The most expensive version of Windows 7 is almost equal to the price of the netbook! Did I mention it is Very slow! When I increased the type size for easier reading many of the pages were off the screen and did not have scroll bars so I could not get to the “next”, “finish” or “OK” buttons. I had to constantly switch resolution from the key board. Only two sizes were available to choose from for the display. There was a very long lag time (up to a minute) to wake it from sleep.

I’ve been using this for close to a month now. I replaced Windows XP with eeeBuntu. I am not sure that was a good decision. Unless you’re a real linux guru, I’d advise you to stick to Windows. eeeBuntu is a lot slower than Windows and is kind of klunky to use.

The battery life is pretty good though the trackpad is annoying. Even the slightest touch while typing sends it going crazy. Reducing the sensitivity doesn’t help. Luckily, there’s a keyboard shortcut to toggle it on/off. The wireless is sometimes a little slow catching network as compared to my Dell XPS.

On the plus side- it’s very light and very convenient. It’s 90% size keyboard doesn’t take too long to get used to.

Perfect portable typewriter & research tool
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I spent a week on vacation with my wife’s MAC trying to edit a section of a project I had underway. It was my first long-term workout with a laptop and it was the most frustrating writing I’ve done. I ended up using the MAC to look for my own laptop.

My needs were simple: a portable typewriter and research tool. I needed enough memory space for multiple iterations of any work in progress and space for two other technical software packages that I use often enough to put on the machine. I also needed Web connectivity for research, a screen with a low squint factor and a keyboard that wasn’t too cramped.

I checked out other netbooks with “solid state” hard drives and this little machine. I pounded away at one on display at the local big-box computer store. Then I took a day and some to mull it over and bought the 1005HAB.

After using the 1005 for four months, I am ready to give this little box a five star rating, all based on how it meets my requirements as a writer & academic research person.

The hard drive space is easily sufficient for the writing and work I do. I have installed the two technical software packages, a multi-lingual dictionary program and OpenOffice 3′s multilingual edition. After removing MicroSoft Office, I have over 130GB of space on the hard drive. I goosed up the memory to 2G and stuffed a 8G SD memory board in the slot on the right side of the keyboard. With all that I’m very satisfied.

The wireless & wired network systems work flawlessly, no problem. The connection speed is good and I have yet to be stalled in the process of working on writing or research.

The screen size works just fine for me. Having the touchpad feature of expanding/zooming the presentation on the screen is a nice feature, but I have to admit having never needing to use it (unless someone sends me an email in 6pt type).

The keyboard is just fine for my bony fingers & cruise-on writing speed. Switching to any of the other three languages I use has been a no-problem set-up. And the ability to turn off the touchpad is really sweet.

I’ve run the machine on battery power some four or five times so far and have found no problems with charge or battery power life. (I spend a lot of time in battery-power environments for other technical devices, so I’m a bit more forgiving when it comes to expected battery life versus real battery life.)

As with any small package technology, users and buyers have to be a bit more careful in the use, storage and transport of their gear. You can’t treat this machine like a military-version, “nuclear hardened” laptop. It’s a plastic box filled with extremely cramped, super-miniaturized stuff. Users expecting to just throw it into the back of the car or leave it on while lurching around inside a backpack will be quickly disappointed. That said, I carry this machine in a Targus bag which holds it, the power supply & cables, a mini-mouse and the owners manual. And it goes in that bag wrapped in the white paper/plastic bag it was originally boxed up in, with another piece of packing plastic between the keyboard and the screen.

I’ve had two occasions to call ASUS tech support (over issues that I admit to having caused) and have each time been impressed with the candor and helpfulness of their phone support line.

Four co-workers have been much impressed with this machine, having seen me use it day after day in an eductional technology environment. If I needed two, I’d buy another one without the least hesitation.

I love everything about this notebook, except for 2 things.

    1. Even after I upgraded my ram to 2Gig(max), it still seems to go slow at times. I’m not sure if other programs are running that I am un aware of that is taking up the memory or what.

    2. Do not like the speakers on the bottom. What a pain if your sitting on the couch with your netbook and its on your lap and have to tilt the netbook in order to hear whats coming out of the speakers.

Everything else I like about the netbook, Battery life is definatly not 10.5 hrs like it says. You can be sure to bump that down to 7hrs on 100% charge.

This is my review, Hope it helps! Good netbook for the price to say the least!

After reading many reviews on this Eee was a little leery about purchasing it. However there seemed to be more positive than negative ones. My daughter has had one for a while and has experienced no problems with the charger, or the puter. We have used the E for the past 2 months and really enjoy it. Yes it does take some getting use to a smaller screen, the key board actually works better than my laptop though(think I wore the space bar out on that one). Did upgrade to the 2gig card and was disappointed that there was absolutely nothing to give you a hint on how to change it. We aren’t that computer savvy but figured it out and apparently did okay cause it works. So anyway I do everything on this little E that I do on the laptop. You can’t beat the price compared to a full blown computer or laptop.

    Enjoy!

We only had one laptop in our house, and my wife and I were finding it harder and harder to deal with such limited access to the internet. I mostly needed to check email, buy stuff online, pay bills on my bank’s website and so forth from the couch. The ASUS works great for what I need. It’s very light, the battery life is amazing (10 hours or so), never gets too hot, and is comfortable to have on your lap. It is definitely low powered, especially with video. On some video sites, the video stutters, and even videos playing from the computer can get out of synch if you full-screen it. That would be my only complaint, but I think this would be true of any Atom processor netbook.

This is one nice Netbook… Does everything you can imagine of. No need for a cdrom/dvd drive, you can put anything you want onto a usb stick drive and your good to go. Fast enough to watch 720p movies off hulu or youtube etc. Not slow at all, good feel keyboard. BEST mouse pad ever, I love the little dots that show you where the touchpad ends and begins, all my friends agree. Battery is like 9 hours, with full “high performance” overclocking on. Web cam is a little slow at refreshing, but its pretty sharp for the size of the netbook, 10/10. (I don’t think the 2GB of ram is necessary, I had 2 in my old laptop, but this one is just so fast with XP and Ubuntu running on it, I will not be upgrading my memory)

I bought this two months ago, and two weeks later, the AC adapter was broken.

After I submitted a ticket online, I got nothing back ( it turned out after four weeks, I got an email reply!), so I called them. I was sent a form to put my credit card information — it was required even though they promised will pay the shipping fee for the new replacement. I had to pay the shipping for returning the broken part.

After I faxed twice the signed form to them, they told me they couldn’t find it. Then I faxed the 3rd time, they finally got it. After two weeks, I got nothing sent to me, so I called again. They told me they don’t have anything in stock, so the part will be sent from Taiwan sometime later. After I waited for another three weeks, still, I got nothing.

I finally bought one by myself at ebay, it took only several days to get delivered to me.

So if you decide to buy this, pray to God it will never break! Or, never buy anything from ASUS — the worst service I ever got in my life.

I tested about ten netbooks at a store, chose this model and bought it online. Who knew Asus would be such a strong leader in netbooks? Not only do I like the way this netbook looks, but I appreciate many things about it. First and foremost, most companies (Dell, I’m looking at you), get the design of the keyboard completely wrong. Not so with Asus. The keys feel good and have an incredible ease of use. Same thing with the tracking pad. So, far I haven’t experienced any software or hardware problems. I also like the way this netbook feels. It has a solid-ness to it that makes me confident I can put it in a backpack and it will be safe.

We are very happy with the Asus Eee 1005HA. We use it unplugged all day long as a second floating PC. The 4 star instead of the 5 star is because there is a power “adapter” anomaly.

We keep the adapter plugged into the outlet(adapter blue light on). If we then plug the other end of the adapter into the PC, with the PC turned off, the adapter “fails”(adapter blue light off). To fix, we unplug everything, giving the adapter several minutes of rest. When we later plug it in to the outlet only, the little blue light comes on. We then turn the PC on, then plug the adapter into it, and the PC begins charging. It seems that the adapter has some sort of circuit breaker that triggers when the adapter is plugged into an “off” PC.

This has happened only twice, so there may be another better fix. It should be better documented by Asus.

I don’t know what would happen if the PC battery was completely drained such that the PC would not come on and we plugged the adapter in. Perhaps with the PC off and the adapter plugged into it, we would then plug the adapter into the outlet.

Do not buy an ASUS product! I purchased a brand new ASUS Netbook (a mistake) from Best Buy (another mistake). It has a 1 year warranty. After just 10 weeks the power adapter stopped working (so I can’t charge the battery). I have a $300 piece of equipment that is totally useless. Both the warranty booklet and the ASUS website say that if there is a problem, to first take the product back to where it was purchased for repair or exchange. I went to Best Buy and they told me that not only do they not carry the power adapter or repair the adapter, they refused to swap it out for another Netbook since it had been over 30 days since purchase. After arguing with the store manager and 2 others at the customer service center, I got the same response: “tough luck, contact ASUS.” So I contacted ASUS, and guess what they said? They didn’t have any power adapters for that brand new Netbook but they could back order me one (some real geniuses running that company, huh?), but they didn’t have any idea how long it would take to get one. Also, they refused to swap it out for another unit. So it is very apparent that both those companies only care about getting their money and nothing more. So far I’ve been waiting a month for another adapter to come in. Anyway, all I can do is just keep waiting for a power adapter for my $300 paperweight. If you do decide to buy ASUS and have any kind of problem, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Worked for 3 days then failed (black screen) for a 3rd failure. ASUS absolutely refused a return or to ship a new replacement. I was totally stonewalled by customer reps including a supervisor. This was the worst consumer treatment I have ever had in my many years of life. Better Business Bureau gives them a C with 181 customer complaints. If yours works well, you are lucky because if it fails you are in for a terrible experience dealing directly with the company. Fortunately I was within the 30 days that Amazon allows for returns so off it went to let Amazon deal with ASUS. I would negative stars if I could. BUYER BEWARE.

Overall performance is slow and sticky on internet use. That’s all I wanted it for and I find it inadequate even after doubling the ram. Wish I had shopped around more.

ive just upgraded from a 904ha to the 1005ha-p. the keyboard is better except for the space bar, its just not wide enough and not centered well. they could do away with the ALT key on the right side of it and make the space bar wider to fill in the space. who need 2 alt keys anyway? the new touchpad design is nice and the onboard mouse buttons are a plus as theyre harder to accidently hit as youre typing. the front edge of this new ‘seashell’ design is a little sharp as youre typing.. a better rolled front edge would certainly be a nicer design for wrist comfortability, but its not too unbearable. the larger SHIFT and BACKSPACE keys are a huge plus.

the screen looks great and is a much better option than the matte type. the ram was super simple to change to 2 gig… just one screw on the bottom cover to get to it.

the a/c adapter plugin is VERY small.. not good or bad, just an observation over the previous 904ha i had. all in all im pleased with the price and the computer.
