Bought just after Win 7 and HW upgrade…LOVE IT!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am one of the folks that purchased just after the Windows 7 and hardware updates. My 1005HA has traveled around the world with me these past ~7 weeks. I upgraded the RAM and Win7 the week after initial purchase and I did notice an improvement in speed. The ATOM 280 is good for typical business traveler needs. My normal usage includes checking e-mail, Skyping, I-POD’ing and watching downloaded video content. I have noticed some sluggish processing while watching video but the power/battery to processing capability ratio is amazing. The screen is very good. Clear and crisp @ 1024. Screen does not appear to be a power hog. HD size (250 Gb) is perfect for my needs. Notebook fits on a seatback tray table with room to spare. The built-in wireless finds signal promptly and has always been reliable. If you want a general purpose, very light-weight, travel companion laptop this is your ticket. Looking to be in the productivity applications suite for more that an occasional .ppt, .doc, or .xls read/review this is not for you. My ultimate measure is that if it was stolen, run over or otherwise dead would I buy it again? YES, in about as long as it took to click buy and add next day shipping.
Yay, Asus?
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
So I bought this Nov. 27th to use for taking notes for the upcoming semester. However, a couple days later, my main laptop burnt out (or something), and so I got to use this earlier than expected. Its been a few weeks now and I can say I’m satisfied with this netbook. However, it has its pros and cons.
Pros:
- It’s small, its light, it works fast despite it’s processor and RAM. I haven’t upgraded the RAM yet but since I have a 2GB from the older laptop, I’ll be switching it over. (I’m pretty sure it’s compatible.)
- It comes with this travel case that isn’t cheaply made.
- The keyboard is comfortable, and you can get used to the shortcuts pretty fast.
- Windows 7 works great on this.
- It doesn’t lag very much, and can run more than 3 processes at a time (and heavy processes at that).
- It’s easy to find out how to contact Asus–the number is on the underside of the laptop.
Cons:
-For some reason, the track pad hasn’t been doing its multi-touch thing. It worked in the beginning, was very convenient, but it seems to have been down. I’ll probably be calling Asus about that.
-I cant change the desktop and appearance. It might just be Windows 7 Starter, but it sucks. : (If anyone has suggestions to this, please let me know!)
-It came with a screw on the rom “compartment” that just wont come off! D:
-The battery seldom tells me that I have over 8 hours. I dont know whether this is because I usually keep it on balanced and not powersaver, but it’d be nice if it lived up to the 10.5 hours.
- It gets fingerprints and what not pretty fast because of its glossyness.
That’s all I can think of for the cons. Overall, this computer’s performance is great. I love it. I’ll definitely be looking at Asus again. I recommend it for any college students, or persons needing a light to-go laptop.
I’ll see to updating this as time goes on.
Eee PC Seashell 1005-HA-PU17-BK
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This netbook is perfect for what it is designed for. I have had no problems with it so far. Have had it for about a month. I did replace the RAM to a 2 gb card. Not necessary for net surfing but I am also running some music recording software on it (FL Studio 8 and EZDrummer) and the extra RAM helps.
The only area where I find poor performance is that streaming video really doesn’t play on this netbook, so youtube and the like is not really an option.
Other than that I am completely satisfied with it at this point.
ASUS- new condition

The ASUS netbook was delivered on time and as-advertised, brand new. 5 stars!
A product that changes the definition of a computer.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a product that has changed the definition of a computer for me …
The most amazing feature is the 10.5 hours battery backup … and even with a constant use with the wireless on, it gives a minimum of 9 hours of backup …
This netbook is like a mobile phone, you charge it once in the morning and then forget about it … use it for the whole day and then put back for charging in the night.
I have used other very good laptops (Thinkpads) and some very bad ones too (Dell Vostro) but one definitely meets the standards of a great machine. The build is very good, the charger is pretty sleek, and the LCD monitor is amazingly clear.
One of the best things, is that this machine does not heat up from the bottom, which is a problem with many other laptops … after they heat up, you can not keep them on your laps!
Windows 7 has been really good to me so far
, The netbook boots up pretty fast and is perfect for super portability.
I was looking for something that can do as much as my laptop and is as small as my mobile … well, this is definitely a lot bigger than a mobile, but given the cost and the speed at which it beats any mobile, I surely recommend this one.
If you got any specific question, post a reply and I’ll answer to my best ability.
Do not buy this (or any other ASUS) PC!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I do not normally write reviews however, I feel compelled to share my AWFUL experience with ASUS customer service.
We purchased this PC in September and within 2 weeks the power adapter began working intermittently. We contacted the resaler we received the item from first (Beach Camera) and they directed us to ASUS customer support.
Our original call went well, they told us that we would have to fill out a form and fax it to them. Once that was completed they would send us a new adapter. After waiting a week or so for the form, we made several calls and finally received for form on October 14th. The form stated that we would have to send the defective one back at our own cost. This seemed odd since it was a manufacturer defect (which they acknowledged was a known problem with this AC adapter), however we had no other choice, so we agreed to it.
Since the adapter worked intermittently and we don’t have a fax machine it was 6 days before we got around to sending out the form. When we finally did, my wife spoke with customer service again two days later and was told that they had not yet received he form, them she called again on the 23rd and was informed that they did not have any adapters in stock and did not know when they would again.
This was in mid October. It is now mid December and I just got off the phone with ASUS customer “service” minutes ago. I was once again informed that not only do they not have them in stock, but they still don’t know when they will. The representative said I could send the ac adapter back now and wait, but again it works intermittently and it would make no sense to send it back before receiving a reliable one.
I asked for an alternative solution, I could purchase a universal adapter and send them the bill. I could purchase a new PC (which they don’t seem to have a shortage of at retail outlets and online despite not having any AC adapters) and return the new machine along with the defective power supply for a refund. Or offered them the opportunity to give me any other solution which gives me a reliable netbook.
Despite the fact that their corporate values (which can be found here: [...]) seem to point to a culture of responsibility and doing whatever it takes to solve a problem, the customer service team seems completely unwilling and/or unable to help solve a customer’s problems.
I will never do business with this company again and suggest that you don’t either.

Light, fast (most of the time), very good memory. Since I don’t type a lot on the road, it is very good for my travel needs.
BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Purchase this (or any other) Asus product at your own risk. I bought a 1005HA PC in September that worked fine until the AC adapter stopped working in early November. When I contacted the company, I was told that they were out of that part but they should be able to send me a replacement by the end of the month. The end of November came and went, but the company still was unable to tell me if/when they would be receiving the adapters from their supplier. Despite the fact that the PC is now as useless as the box in which it came without the ability to charge the battery, Asus has refused to do anything to resolve this problem – or give my any timeframe within which I can expect a solution. If you decide to purchase one of these PC’s from Asus, then only do it if you are comfortable knowing that if you have any problems, your Asus warranty isn’t worth the paper it is printed on.
MINI WONDER MACHINE
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It’s small, it’s sturdy, the battery keeps going, and yes it’s sexy and highly functional. Sadly, this is not my car, it’s my new netbook. Quickly I can throw it in a bag to go to the library, take it to class to take notes, go to the coffee shop for an interview, and then sit on the couch and surf the net while watching Christmas movies. Amazing computer for the price, love it so much, bought my husband one too!
So far not very impressed

Just received this netbook last night – plugged it in overnight to charge. This morning I went to turn it on – it turned on the processor/hard drive and a couple of lights but the screen was totally blank. Called the Amazon customer service – by the way 5+ stars for Amazon’s customer service – tried the usual on/off – pulled battery on/off – still no display. The CS Rep requested I call ASUS CS and see if there was any magic they might be able to preform, and if there wasn’t to call back and they would ship out a new one. I made Amazon’s CS Rep give me the ASUS support number cause it wasn’t listed on the warrenty info or manual and I didn’t want to dig through their website and try to find it. Called ASUS, had to wait less than 10 minutes (not to bad#, and tried a number of things, none of which worked so ASUS’s CS Rep pronounced it DOA #dead on arrival#. Now for the interesting part – I could return the netbook to ASUS but I would have to pay the shipping to them! Yes that’s right – for something that didn’t work from the get go – I had to pay to ship it back or I could return it back to Amazon. Since I already new that Amazon would take it back and I wouldn’t be required to pay for shipping that’s what I decided to do. So I called Amazon back – they quickly and painlessly took care of everything – are shipping a new one out #no charge) and included a link for return shipping labels of the DOA netbook.
Impression so far – netbook looks very appealing – size & weight are great – to bad the computer doesn’t work! I will update this review when I get the replacement – but right now I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have bought the Toshiba! I bought the ASUS because I wanted the longer battery time.
This is a great Netbook
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I spent some time researching this item and was happy to see that it received high marks from Consumer Reports. If you read any reviews on this Netbook you’ll soon learn that one of the greatest advantages is the extremely long battery life. I travel cross country quite a bit and had replaced my DVD drive with a second battery just to extend life on my Dell laptop, but this ASUS has it beat hands down.
The touchpad navigation works very well. I’m not particularly techy and hadn’t realized that actually tapping the touchpad is the equivalent to a left mouseclick. Very useful on a netbook so it’s easy to navigate without severe hand cramps. You’re also able to expand an image on the screen by holding two fingers on the touchpad and pulling them apart, similar to expanding an image on an i-phone. It’s easy to change screen settings to get full size image on a LCD flatscreen TV (handy for streaming video’s etc.). I’ve run through a couple feature length films without depleting more than half the battery life.
Lack of a DVD drive is a bit of a nuisance but I’ve been able to accomplish everything I wanted to do by transferring material via a 4g memory stick. Overall great product!
Excellent Netbook
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just received my netbook, and I love it. Although it’s not the fastest computer in the world, it gets the job done! The keyboard is well-sized, the battery life so far has been great. I’m looking forward to using this thing on a plane to watch movies. I went ahead and purchased the DVD drive, and it too works great. I have no complaints!
Real review from owner of 1005HA-PU17. Impressed but NEEDS 2GB!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had my netbook for a full day and have already upgraded to Windows 7 Professional(no discs required! as you can do it through the included Windows upgrade program). I’ve also installed a number of programs including Office 2003 Pro and upgraded to 2GB of RAM.
I’m very impressed with this machine, but I will tell you right now that the speed boost I got from installing 2GB of RAM makes such an upgrade almost required in my eyes. If you decide to buy this via Amazon, you should automatically include this Crucial 2GB 667 Mhz CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory or Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module to your order. I’m using 667Mhz memory which is what the first link points to, but I’ve heard 800Mhz (second link) could be even faster if the Eee is put into some sort of performance mode.
Windows 7 runs very well with 2GB and a bit sluggish with 1GB. By all means however, 1GB will suffice if all you’re doing it light word processing and web browsing.
Streaming movies is choppy on my machine, although I haven’t yet tried this out with 2GB of memory installed. The multitouch trackpad can be a little finnicky at times, and the mouse button is almost too hard to press for casual clicks. Luckily the track pad can be tapped for the same effect. Synaptics (the trackpad vendor) has a good piece of software to help fine-tune the track pad settings which has helped me a bit.
A big selling feature of this machine over others is that even with the best battery life among peers- it’s 6cell battery doesn’t protrude hideously like it does in almost all other models. This is especially true when comparing to the Dell and Lenovo models. With them, the 6 cell battery lifts the back end of the computer by at least half and inch- making it hard to use on your lap and awkward to fit flat in a bag with heavy books. The Toshiba has a protruding battery as well, but it sticks out of the back of the machine, so it’s not as much of a nuisance.
Overall, I recommend getting this machine (Windows 7) because it lifts the arbitrary 160GB hard drive limitation Microsoft forces XP machines to abide by. For the money (maybe $50 more expensive than base lenovo, dell, or HP models) this is definitely the best machine out there (with the Toshiba N series the possible exception). Battery life is amazing (I’ve gotten 7 hours so far with multiple software downloads and installs and still have a 25% charge remaining). This also includes wi-fi N, the Intel N280 processor (with more robust front-side bus- IMPORTANT) and bluetooth which are all extra on other machines. I even like the zippered case that comes with the machine- a nice touch.
I believe the only netbook that offers the same value is the HP Mini 311. While a good chunk of money more than this unit, it comes with an 11″ sceen and runs on the Nvidia ION platform for HD graphics. The Toshiba is also a nice unit, I’m happy I picked the Asus.
Little Gem
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
What a little gem. It is fast and works very smoothly.
I purchased the 2GB memory at same time as 1005HA-P, but have not installed yet as I have found that this netbook with Windows 7 Starter responds immediately with the 1GB memory. So, I’ll install the 2GB module later. So far, I have used this netbook to install and remove programs, explore some of the file structure and surf and use web. My wifi is left on all the time.
Interestingly about the battery. First, note for those who complained about less than the advertised use time within the first day or so – as the manual points out, it will take several charge cycles to reach maximum potential. Even so, here is an interesting observation. Today is my third day with this netbook. When I started the day it showed about 3 hours of battery time remaining from yesterday’s use. Fine. After using for 2 – 3 more hours it showed over six hour remaining! Yesterday I also noticed that it seemed to show more time at some point than it had earlier. Leads me to believe an algorithm is being used to calculate remaining time based on type of work being done rather than straight clock time. At any rate this thing lasts a loooooong time. First day, after initial charging, I used in afternoon and evening and then into mid-AM next day prior to needing to re-charge.
The scroll pad is extremely sensitive which is sometimes irritating, but there is a button, upper left of keyboard, which can turn it off.
I am careful to unplug charger, both ends, immediately after charge is finished to minimize over heating problem reported by several users. I also downloaded the screen saver program from ASUS, downoads, this netbook, windows 7 utilities. It’s called an ASUS system utility, but description says it’s the screen saver. Then after downloading, you find it under ASUS programs within ALL PROGRAMS. I thought it would open automatically after installing; it did not.
All in all, I can find no complaint about this little gem. Beautiful, very fast, and battery, at least for me, seems to last and last and last.
Great netbook, lousy OS
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This netbook is everything it says it is. Good-looking, excellent battery life, crisp display … Pity about Windows 7, though. It drove me crazy. I was overjoyed to find EEEbuntu ([...]), a Linux distribution customized for the EEE. It’s clean and fast, and makes excellent use of the available real-estate. I was nervous about using it at first, so I installed it on a memory stick, and booted from there, but it didn’t take long before I was installing it on the hard drive. I’m dual-booting at the moment, because there’s plenty of space on the disk, but I suspect it won’t be long before I blow away that nasty Windows OS for good.
This is the one to get!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is my first netbook, owned it for a month now and took it on a recent two-week vacation where it worked beautifully! I upgraded the RAM to 2Gb and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. Battery life is more than sufficient, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work great (using a Bluetooth mouse with it), apps are responsive (no issues with the speed of the HD). The keyboard is very nice for a netbook; this was probably my biggest hesitation, and it is not an issue at all.
I will note that the audio output via the headphone jack is a little low – movies were just barely ok through headphones. Fortunately had a headphone amp I used with my iPod, and it worked great with this – even split the output to my three kids’ headphones with no problems.
The size and weight is awesome, it was such a pleasure to just pull this out of the case, hit the power button to pull it out of sleep and resume using within seconds.
Excellent netbook, have had no issues at all.
This netbook delivers on performance, productivity, and comfortability
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First, I acknowledge that I actually own the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK with Windows 7 Starter; This is not the model that includes Win XP, which has different hardware specs.
After over a week of owning and actively using the 1005-PU17-BK, I wish to share the following points:
- Reading the reviews of the 1005HA Win XP model, I was hesitant to purchase any Eee netbook model, fearing issues with the power adapter. Upon vigorous daily use, I have had no issues with the power adapter at all.
- The keyboard layout is comfortable and the keys are a manageable size, with the exception of the UP/Down arrow keys. I like to scroll through web pages using the arrow keys; both keys are small for my average sized fingers.
- The netbook’s performance is more than adequate for my needs, which includes word processing, web surfing, email, and watching video files. Note that if you are considering this model to watch high def video (1080p), this is not for you. Refer to an ION based netbook, like the HP Mini 311 or the Eee PC 1201N.
- Compared to the advertised battery life of 10.5 hours, my battery usage ranged at approximately 8 hours, using a “balanced” power scheme.
I am satisfied with the purchase of the 1005HA-PU17. Before making my decision on this model, I was considering the HP Mini 311. Although the Mini 311 featured the ION based video hardware, the Eee PC model included a 802.11n wireless NIC. Since my needs weighed more towards productivity than entertainment, I went for the extra wireless throughput.
Excellent Product
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Works great, looks great, no complaints; looking to upgrade to 2GB so that ought to help a bit w multitasking.
Good but could have been better
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have been using this laptop for almost 4-5 days now and my initial assessment is as follow:
Strengths:
- Nice look and feel. Very compact and handy computer, almost the size of a book. It can even fit into one of my jackets.
- Great keyboard, almost as good as normal keyboard. It only took my a few hours to get used to the keyboard. However, I am still not using many of the keyboard features/short cuts and it will take a few days before I can fully master it.
- Great battery life, not 10.5 hours as claimed but definitely 7-8 hours of regular use. I never worry about having to charge the computer and this is more than what I needed/expected.
Weaknesses:
- 1GB RAM is not enough, and this computer is significantly slower than my regular computer. Not sure why they don’t bring it with 2GB RAM. In last 4-5 days, I had to use task manager a few times to close non-responding programs. I have noticed that if I open more than 4-5 windows, my internet browser (Firefox) will freeze.
- Resolution is bad, you have to scroll down every single web page. I hope they can come up with better resolution within the same screen size.
- They make a 500 GB online storage claim which is actually just a trial which feels misleading. I have tried to set it up but couldn’t easily figure out the program.
- Touchpad is slightly sluggish and sometimes I would end up resizing my windows or increase/decrease browser font size inadvertently. The sluggish part could be due to low RAM and slow processing power though.
Not specific to this computer but if you’re of thinking of getting a netbook, don’t expect serious performance. These netbooks are good for internet browsing, checking emails while traveling but not as the main computer you want to have. I think it’s great to own a netbook due to the portability and flexibility of use they provide but they come at great performance disadvantage and not necessarily very cheap.
Fits the bill and solid as a rock
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I should wait a bit longer before posting a review, but I have to say that thus far this Asus Eee has been awesome. Mine has the Win XP Home it, and I’ve not had any problems from Windows Update, drivers, USB devices or anything. Great little machine. I use it pretty much just for Gmail, Gapps, and Internet.
Only one complaint and that is even after following very carefully the initial charging procedures for the battery I don’t get any 10.5 hours of active use out of it. It’s more like 8 hours. I’d consider that to be pretty damn good though, and I’d never sit down and use for 8 hours non-stop anyhow.
Power Supply?
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The first one I bought stopped charging after a week. The chrger worked but the battery wouldn’t hold a charge. I contacted Asus, who informed me that the batteries were backordered and he didn’t know when they would be available. I immediatley returned the computer to Amazon for an exchange.
The new one lasted about six weeks before the charger stopped working(light went out). I called Asus and arranged for a replacement charger, which is also backordered. That was a month ago.
Asus shouldn’t sell product they can’t support.
Edited:My bad. The unit was actually an ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-VU1X-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – 8.5 Hour Battery Life. Different battery.
My opinion remains unchanged. They can’t support their product.
DOA
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Ordered 2 units, one black one blue, intended as Christmas gifts for my nephew and niece. I opened up the black one first. Loaded up software, configured users, upgraded memory, web cam, touch pad, keyboard, wifi N, bluetooth, everything works just fine.
I than hooked up the blue one. DOA! Tried plugged and unplugged battery, ac power, F2…no sign of any activity other than the fan and those little blue lights. Called Asus 24/7 help support. Friendly service lady but all suggestions she gave I had already tried myself before.
Amazon makes the return and replacement policy easy but the replacement is shipped via USPS. I am crossing my fingers now because I have a few games and blu-ray moves from amazon took near a month to be delivered via USPS.
As of my view on the working black one, well I consider myself as a power user. My desktop hard drive or graphic card alone costs nearly as much as this netbook already and my current laptop is the 17″ MacBook Pro. So I just can’t help but feel this netbook is sluggish from time to time. The plastic casing feels cheap compares to the aluminum on MackBook Pro. The touch pad is too small for me.
Bottom line is SD video playback and Skype works just fine.
================================================================================
Update 11-28-09
Received the replacement yesterday and this one works right out of the box as expected. Some people may think I gave it 3 stars because of the DOA so I want to clarify no it is not. As a netbook, I think this Asus 1005HA stands out among all others in a few areas like keyboard, wifi n, bluetooth, and 250G instead of 160G on most models. The keyboard has nearly the same dimension and feel my 17″ MacBook has. Only missing is the backlit. And the wifi n is exceptional good. I went outside to the far side of my backyard and I still got 75% of signal strength. At home I can get like 10+ networks from my neighbors where my MacBook can only catch 4.
What I can’t stand is still the processor performance and small screen size. It is quite frustrating when it keeps me always wondering “did I click it?” Either the processor is too slow to catch my click or it takes too long to response. I just end up often guessing and guessing “did I click it?”
I see the price dropped a bit now and I think it is more reasonable. For around $450 you can get a 15″ notebook with 2GHz+ dual core, 3G RAM, 300G hd, build in optical drive and Windows 7 Home Premium.
This is a great value netbook.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First let me say that I purchased this item from another website, but let me be clear in saying that Amazon is my number one site for all types of purchases.
I have had this product for about a week now and I must say it does deliver. Not only does it have great battery perfomance, it offers a sleugh of other features that just make it an overall great value. I have been pondering it over for a while and decided to go the route of the netbook, its small enough to be portable, but has the abililty to handle basic task such as word processing, web browsing and email. I purchased this item with Windows 7 and was upset with the limitation of not being able to change the wallpaper. However, ASus has a great application/utility on their site that they released that circumvents this hinderance. I have it with Win 7 Starter, 1GB of Ram (which I upgraded to 2 GB – highly recommended) 250 GB HDD (with 500GB of Internet Storage, graciously provided by Asus), comes with an inner sleeve (I recommended getting a carry case), built in webcam and mic. It also has 3 USB ports, bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN, memory card reader and best of all 10.5hours of battery life, that you cannot beat.
Overall, for the cost and value plus the things you get from this machine, it is definately worth the purchase in my opinion.
You might be wondering why I gave it 4 stars after all the praise. Well Win 7 Starter for one, that is mainly M$ fault for even release a crippled version of windows 7, shame on them. And while the machine perfoms well for a netbook, dont expect to be doing lots of task at once. When you are use to fast desktop PCs it can be hard to take a step backwards.
Major problems with sleep mode
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I received this computer only yesterday. Today I put the computer into sleep mode. When I tried to wake it back up I got a black screen. Turned the power off and restarted, took the battery out, tried FN+F1, tried everything, and I still have a black screen.
Now I have to send it back to Asus for repairs on only the 2nd day.
There’s something wrong with this computer running Windows 7. I would avoid it.
Don’t Believe IT!!!!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Don’t believe those reviewers who just got their product two days ago and think its great!
My power cord went out within the first 3 weeks of use. Asus said they’d send a replacement and I should get it in 3 business days. Well, more than two weeks later I got it! The replacement worked fine for about 10 days and IT went out too! Called Asus again and got the same story. Well, that was the 27th of October. On November 13th I called and was told they just received the return request on November 11th. When I explained they had only given me 24 hours to fax the RMA forms back and that was on the 27th I was told they were behind. I just received an email saying they are OUT OF STOCK on the replacement cords and won’t get new ones until December!!!!
So far I’ve been out of the computer I purchased for 6-7 weeks of the 10 weeks I’ve owned it! And, it will be at least another 3-4 weeks until its operational again!
I only wish I had bought it from a company as reputable as Amazon! (Beware of zipzoomfly!) When I told Asus I wanted a refund I was told to contact the reseller, the reseller says to contact the manufacturer. Neither want to be responsible.
Really! Keep looking! You can find a netbook out there just as nice for about the same price. It doesn’t matter how much you spend if it doesn’t work it doesn’t work!

Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I thought I found the right netbook with the 1005HA but then I noticed the mouse pad has little dimples on it. I have sensitive finger tips and that forced me to not buy the item. I am very dissappointed that ASUS would do this. I don’t think none of the other brands have this. Totally screwed up my mind; the mouse pad is too important to not be completely happy with the feel.
How did I survive without this netbook?
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve only had my ASUS Eee 1005HA-PU17 about a week, and I’m already wondering how I survived without it. Coupled with a Verizon wireless card and service (costs extra) you can go anywhere and still be productive. (Even without an extra card, you can use the built in WIFI as long as you’re near an available access point.) I’ve used it on the Chicago subway, coffee shops, and even the tiny waiting room of a Jiffy Lube. I’ve always got the internet at my fingertips. Yes, it’s a little cramped if you’re used to working on a desktop, but it’s small and relatively light and does everything I need it to do. I’ve had no need to upgrade the 1 gig memory to 2 gig, and Windows 7 starter is fine too. Yes, it is a fingerprint magnet as others have pointed out. So what. I’m addicted to this little sleek black machine and take it with me everywhere. Very very happy with my purchase, it’s a great deal.
New Netbook User Raves
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am new to netbooks, but this netbook rocks. It is perfect for my classes. I can use it at home, or carry it around very easily in my messenger bag. It connects wirelessly to the internet and has some storage space on it for my papers. The battery life is great. I don’t mind the blue background (with Windows 7, you are not able to easily change the background). It’s user friendly and oh so portable.
Great for basic computing on the go
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I needed a good portable netbook for school (taking classes at night while working full time) and travel. I’ve had the Asus-1005HA with Windows 7 Starter for a week now and it’s exactly what I needed:
- Small and lightweight, but with a bright screen and comfortable keyboard. Even the touchpad is comfortable. Seriously, the ergonomics rock for a computer of this size.
- Great battery life – just play with the default settings to get the battery life – performance trade off where you want it. I leave my charger at home and use the computer during work breaks, at the library, and at school and then just plug it in at night to recharge. I could honestly go 2-3 days (maybe more…) of on and off use like this without plugging it in at night.
- Respectable processing power. If all you need are basic office functions, email, internet, and basic multimedia, then this netbook will do everything you need it to do. If you’re looking for heavy multimedia, gaming, or using such programs as Adobe Creative Suite, then look somewhere else.
- Minimal bloatware to get rid of after setup.
Some tips:
- Buy the 2 GB RAM upgrade when you order. It takes all of 2 minutes to swap out the new 2 GB board with the existing 1 GB board and clearly helps out running multiple applications.
- Windows 7 will download a bizzilion updates when you first start it up. In the process, it thrashed the Asus-provided Bluetooth drivers and caused several Bluetooth-related device driver errors. Just reinstall the Asus-provided Bluetooth drivers from the included recovery DVD located at DRIVE:\DriversBluetoothAsusSetup.exe and all will be well. Just don’t install any of the Microsoft-recommended Win7 updated Bluetooth drivers from the Microsoft Update website ever again (or even in the first place) and you’ll never have this problem.
- Windows 7 Starter has some annoying issues…not going to address that here…but it is a nice interface, stable, fast, and clean. Again, this is just a netbook – you can upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium (or more) via online download, but given what this netbook is designed for, just ask yourself if it’s really necessary…
Issues:
- High gloss shell looks great right up until you touch it or a speck of dust lands on it. I’ve taken to keeping a lint-free cotton cloth (like what you’d use to finish polish a car) handy to wipe the computer down occasionally.
- I have this netbook connected to an XP-based home network. No issues with file-sharing, but for the life of me I can’t get this Win7-based netbook to connect to my network printer, even after installing all the proper printer drivers. Workaround is to place the files I want printed from the netbook into a dropbox on my desktop computer and then print from there. Not sure if this the fault of the netbook or of the way Win7 and WinXP interact with each other over a network…
