I used the netbook for 2 weeks as bought with 1GB & Win 7 Basic. At the same time, I purchased 2GB upgrade (Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400), Win 7 Home Premium upgrade, and External DVD (Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive)

For me, the basic netbook was minimally acceptable. Upgraded to 2GB 1st and that made a world of difference. Everything worked better. As for the RAM and shutdown or other problems, there have been a few times when shutdown command would not shut off the computer but that has happened only twice.

The fault I have found which others may not have is going from AC to battery to AC. It does not happen all the time and I doubt that this is systemic to other ASUS 1005PE. When operating on AC, the netbook operates in SUPER PERFORMANCE mode which basically overclocks the ATOM cpu. Going to battery can cause the netbook to drop back performance to save power. When I go back to AC with netbook still running, the switch to Super Performance (overclocking) the video has gone to a state of various flashing colored rectangles. Ctl-Alt-Del does not bring it out of this. The only thing I can do is to force a power off. This has not happened everytime but it is annoying so before plugging into AC, I manually set the performace by pushing the left side power button and put it in Power Save mode. Once it is plugged in, I can up the performance to Super Performance with no problem.

I do not know if the problem is with the CPU or the added RAM. For me, I have a workaround and not a problem.

I have not tried the netbook with an external monitor.

I use the netbook for Web surfing, paying bills online, Word Processing, Excel Spreadsheets.

I have found that I can watch streaming videos from YouTube and Hulu. Of course, HD is not an option. I have also found that “Opera” works best for YouTube and Hulu with less hesitation. I do know that without the extra 1MB streaming videos was painful. MSIE will work streaming videos with only a slight increase in hesitation.

The speakers are very poor. Some of the audio with YouTube videos were very difficult to hear. I had to use earplugs for some.

As far as battery life, I have not tried to push it to the max but have used my netbook for 5 to 6 hours and the battery indicator showed 20% remaining and requested switch to AC. I doubt that it will ever reach 10 or 11 hours. It seems that it will meet my portable needs.

The “N” wireless reception in my home has helped. My older HP Laptop with G wireless usually connects in our living room at low or poor and will drop out from time to time. With the netbook, I have fair to good connection using N. I have never lost a connection.

I seldom use the external Samsung DVD except to load a few programs. I have tried a few video DVD’s with Samsung to see how well the netbook worked with the Samsung DVD playing and the DVD’s were easily watchable. I have not tried to burn CD’s or DVD’s.

This ASUS is a very nice package and I would recommend it to anyone with the caveats to upgrade to 2GB.

My wife plays a lot of Facebook games and I let her try it. If it worked for her, I would get her one as well. She feels the display is too limited for Farmville so she has inherited my 15″ HP Laptop which she likes much better.

The ASUS netbook has two means of turning it on. The right power buttom boots WIN 7. The left button brings up ASUS ExpressGate OS with their own 5 apps – Web browser, Online Games, Chat, Photo Manager, & Skype. If you want quick access to the web and do not mind using the ASUS web browser, it takes less than a minute to turn on and be connected to the web whereas going the WIN 7 route, it takes close to 5 minutes with all the other stuff on my netbook. Their browser is minimal like an older MSIE – no tabs and importing favorites may be extremely difficult. I have not attempted it but seems to only import/export HTML type files. I do not use ASUS Expressgate and figure most people will not use it.

      Hope this helps

Delivery was within the shipping timeline. Wonderful product out of the box. Plug & Play with easy access to our wireless networks. The keyboard was not too small and RAM effectively managed web applications. Windows 7 Starter is minimalist; any applications beyond Web access will need drivers downloaded. For some inexplicable, to me, reason, the screen went black during a routine on-line session. The Netbook was no longer of any use.

Amazon’s 30-day return for refund policy is GREAT! Thank goodness it did not go blank on day 31.

I would give it 6 stars if I could …
      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I seldom write reviews but I love this netbook – I have had it for 3 months and it has far exceeded my expectations – I can’t believe how fast it boots up – 11 seconds – always brings a smile to my face – I have never used any other computer that comes close to it – I am also amazed by the long battery life – I really didn’t believe the specs – makes me wonder what’s wrong with all the others – love the keyboard – way better than my Sony VAIO that cost 3 times as much – thanks again and again to the other reviewers who said be sure to get the white model – it is beautiful – I get comments on it all the time – and for some reason it really doesn’t show fingerprints – I am really happy that I bought this – seems like a fantastic price for what you get …

the two negatives I will mention are (1) I didn’t like some of the touchpad settings (it was always scolling by accident) and it took me forever to figure out how to modify them (go to control panel – hardware and sound – mouse – device settings – settings) (2) there is a noticeable delay loading some websites – I figure that is the tradeoff with a netbook and I am more than happy to wait a few extra seconds – I am a big skeptic about most things but ASUS has totally earned my respect with this computer – I highly recommend it …

      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My battery, at 88% right now is showing 10hr remaining battery life as I type this review. I use this netbook for days before I have to recharge it. Without a doubt, this laptop’s greatest feature is its phenomenal battery life.

I upgraded to 2gb of ram shortly after purchase, and also installed Windows 7 Ultimate Edition x64 (which works beautifully, if you were wondering). I enjoy snappy performance of all of my MS Office productivity programs, as well as speedy web browsing, movie playback, and music.

This is, of course, not my primary computer as I also own a full-featured 17″ notebook. However, the Asus EEE PC 1005pe is a fine travel companion, and I can do everything I need and want with it on the road with virtually no compromises. I always feel like performance is up to snuff, and even this impatient reviewer never thinks anything lags too much.

Upgrade the ram, upgrade the OS if you like (I definitely like!), and you will have more of a “notebook” than a “netbook.”

Lightweight, stylish, extraordinarily easy to bring with you everywhere you go, this Asus EEEpc is a total winner. Look no further.

      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased this for the battery life that is supposed to last eleven (11) hours and for the white color and have had the item for over a month now and have been closely watching the battery life. In the real world useI get about seven hours of battery life. By real world use I am surfing the web, checking email, watching news video broadcasts and perhaps using the netbook to read a novel. I am somewhat disappointed in the battery life hence the four star rating.

With regard to my choice of white, I am delighted in the color because it hides fingerprints, smudges that just come with use of the machine. I find that I only have to wipe off the body of the netbook about once a week and it always looks respectable. With regard to screen resolution — you just don’t have much choice and it does well for my general use and allows one to read web pages without having to scroll from side to side. The screen can be viewed not only from sitting directly in front of the screen but from the sides as well.

The speakers are a surprise for the size of them. One does not expect much in the way of sound from a netbook but this little gem puts out a lot of volume and you can easily watch a movie on the screen and would not have to wear headphones to hear it and I am hard of hearing my folks. The sound quality from the speakers is adequate and as I already mentioned the volume they provide is a bonus.

I have not found the need to update the amount of ram and am running the provided Windows 7 Starter which is a joke as it is such a pared down operating system that Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves. Thankfully, with a little searching on the internet, one can find a work around for the lack of ability to change the desktop, theme, etc.

The keyboard is cramped but workable if one can learn to be VERY careful when using the right shift key.

I purchased this item knowing about the faults thanks to the views at Amazon.com and the only major disappointment is the battery life. I have not needed to call for warranty service and can not speak with regard to the type of service one can expect.

I hope this review has been helpful.

      Very Nice Product
      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this netbook for my wife as a gift. She loves the computer. It is very fast, evens runs better than her old laptop. We use it in tandem with a cell phone set as a modem to allow surfing the web while traveling. It stays connected very well, allowing her to find directions, resturants, detours etcetera. She is able to update her facebook account anytime she wishes. The SD card slot is compatable with her camera, and allows quick transfer of her images. The hard drive is more than adequate for the average user. I am amazed at the quality of the display, and the battery life. After several weeks of use, we are experiencing 6~7 hours of battery life of heavy use. I wish the 2GB sim was available from the manufacturer, instead of requiring an upgrade. I will upgrade the RAM to 2Gb in the next couple of weeks, as 1GB is not really enough RAM to allow Windows 7 starter edition to run at its best. I would recommend this device to anyone, provided they understand the limitations of a netbook as compared to a fully configured laptop/desktop.

I took the time to read the reviews of this computer before I bought it, so I thought I would leave one. I also want to leave on because I am 100% satisfied. I surf the internet on this thing, write papers for school, use skype, I can watch videos.. it is a great little computer. I haven’t had one complaint. I am careful not to go to any sites where there may be a virus.. but I am careful on all PC’s.. this is a fantastic machine.. it is so lightweight.. I bring it with me when I commute… just love this computer and for the price, it is that much more spectacular.. thanks.. hope you guys like it as much as I do… also, battery life is very long.. have never run out while working or in use.. just a great little computer.

I originally got this computer for the living room as a secondary computer to browse the web while watching tv, take with me when I travel, etc. It has been great for that, in fact I tend to use it now more than my “main” computer as it’s so quick to startup and so easy to use. The one thing that bothered me is the small keyboard but you get used to it in a couple days.

I also recently upgraded to 2GB which has sped it up quite a bit.

Overall – great little computer. I highly recommend.

      Screen Issues
      Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I purchased this computer for use while traveling. The fifth day of my first trip to Europe with it, the power to the screen went completely out leaving me with a black screen. Global tech support could do little besides tell me to ship it back for repair. I ended up having to visit internet cafes for the duration of my month long trip. I sent it back upon return home and very quickly Asus sent it back seemingly repaired. Unfortunately within three weeks of having it back and running, the screen went black again. I can forgive and forget the first time but the second time with the same problem is unacceptable. Unfortunately, Asus’s 24 hour customer service can offer little help. I argued for quite some time for a replacement computer but all they can do is set up a case number. You have to send the computer in for a technician to look at it and hope they will fix or replace it. The technician offers little to no feedback. I am leaving for Europe again in three weeks and do not yet have my computer back. I do not even know if I can trust it again while traveling.

I have had computers for years now and have never before experienced so many technical issues. I was only running basic internet. However, I am glad to read so many positive reviews and hope this is an isolated incident.

      Good hardware, Questionable Software
      Rating:2 out of 5 stars
While the product gets just two stars from me, if the review were just about the hardware it would score much higher, probably 4 stars. The physical product is well designed. Folded the battery sticks out just enough to make it a comfortable hand grip and easy to carry. There is a slight lip on the edge to help with opening the computer. The exterior quality is very good and so far finger markings have not been a problem. The Keyboard is a bit small and could stand improvement with curved keys and better feedback but for one or two hours of typing on the go it is adequate. The screen is also quite small, as necessitated by the small design and probably cost considerations. But if I had my ultimate preference I would increase the screen height by at least an inch. The other problem is the touchpad is much too sensitive and tends to bounce me around the document. I may be too mouse centric and luckily the touch pad can be turned off.

Where the product really falls down for me is the Microsoft software. My goal in getting this was to get a Linux computer to try out and probably lead a transition completely away from Microsoft products. No I am not an apple aficionado. I have been using PC’s since 1980 and made the choice away from Apple to PC systems years ago because they were open systems that allowed all kinds of third party software and worked reasonably well. But of late MS products have led to crashes, incompatibilities with products from other vendors and even between MS products. When I “upgraded” to Office 2007 my computer was out of commission for close to a week. Yes eventually it worked, but I still cannot get some features I use regularly to work. Recently in creating a file for an Amazon upload I couldn’t draw a line in 2007 so had to open Word 2003, open the file, draw the line and then save the file. Yes, I got it to work, but with many additional steps.

And with the MS products on the Asus, the story was similar. Windows 7 would not recognized my printers in my office network, although XP had no problem doing so. The Windows 7 version on this machine seems to be a crippled version of the software. The crippling is redundant. So far its performance has been standard mediocre. A new interface which some may find interesting I find unnecessary. I want consistency across devices and don’t want to search for new buttons to climb up the file hierarchy or list my files. Windows 7 also takes up a great deal of space with empty space that should be eliminated to increase the space available for viewing files. And of course Office 2007 is a problem. Since I have the rights to load another version of Office 2007 I entered the product Key into the software but it would not recognize this key. Apparently I am to buy a whole new version of Office, even though my prior purchase for the whole suite includes two uploads.

And of course the product comes with Internet Explorer. My first act after running into these problems was to download OpenOffice and Firefox and they work flawlessly, so far. My solution will be to move over completely to Linux, but that will initially require a new flash drive. It would have been much easier and better if the manufacturer had provided a Linux version. But since they seem not to be available in the US, I have no choice but to downgrade the product. A responsible manufacture would offer customers choice in software.

After several months of usage I have found the software even more annoying. So far Windows 7 has shut me off twice in the middle of important work to load “upgrades.” Why can’t it load those when starting up like Firefox does, or when shutting down like XP does, or warn me in some fashion. This is just a shoddy operating system.

Old Fogey Learning more all the time

If I have a complaint about this product it is that the small manual that comes with it doesn’t explain the very basics about how it works. I am an “old fogey” in my sixties and when searching for a netbook, I wanted something smaller than a traditional laptop to use for writing when I travel. Because I was raised before we reached the digital age, like most older folks, I sometimes struggle with digital functionality. I looked at netbooks in several stores and reviewed them online at several sources before settling on the ASUS. The big thing that ASUS didn’t tell me is that the two power buttons offer different functions. If they did, I didn’t see it. Heck, I didn’t even notice that the machine had a second power button! The left side power function takes you to “ASUS World,” (my name for it) where you get almost instant access to the internet. We are talking about less than ten seconds. It is fast and easy to navigate. It also shuts down in seconds. No waiting forever. But, I tried downloading MS Office 2010 beta to this side and it wouldn’t take it due to not enough memory. I was very frustrated. Then, by sheer accident, my wife turned the ASUS on using the right side power button. Suddenly we had access to traditional laptop functions! Now I could download Office 2010 and write! As I learn more and more about this machine, I simply love it! I am writing, we are skyping, surfing the net, etc., and this little baby exceeds my expectations. I just wish the users manual told you more about it up front. I highly recommend this netbook. You simply don’t need anything else!

      - Battery life delivers as advertised (using SHE)

      - Chiclet KB easy and comfortable, trackpad just ok (prefer lenovo)

      Enjoy!

I’ve been using this netbook for about a month and a half and I can give a fair opinion on it, its a great deal!!! battery life is really good, performance is good as well, I put Windows 7 utlimate on it and it runs pretty smoothly, storage is above average, keyboard has a nice design, screen is good also.

Carefully consider its pros and cons before you buy it!
      Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is my first netbook experience and it’s only for 4 days. I really like it, but not to the extent that I have to use it everyday. Here are a few things I consider are good and bad about it:

      Pros:

      - Windows 7 Starter is simple and easy to use. You just have to download a quick application to change the wallpaper (google “change wallpaper for Windows 7 Starter”). Don’t have to waste money to update the OS if you just want its basic functions.

      - Long battery with choices of S.H.E. or ExpressGate to save even more

      - Nice-looking and easy-to-type keyboard. Just take a few days to get used to and you’ll love it.

      - Fast enough for me who is a student. I don’t see the need to upgrade it to 2gb RAM.

      - Large storage, just don’t download too much music/movies

      - Microsoft Office functions excellently on it.

      - Built-in camera and microphone with good quality (I do make frequent international calls)

      - The multi-touch touchpad is helpful once you get used to it.

      - Very nice WHITE glossy appearance

      Cons:

      - The performance is not always stable at some tasks, both online and offline. Sometimes it’s really slow or frozen for a few seconds during web-surfing, even though I was not multitasking.

      - I’d rather the volume buttons to be independent than combined with the “Fn” key. The hot keys are often useful to me, but this netbook is extremely slow with ALL of them. Once I tried to use the “Esc” button to exit a fullscreen Youtube video and it was just stuck. Nothing worked, even the mouse pointer, and finally I had to close it using Ctrl+Alt+Del. That has not happened again but it made me question the PC’s overall performance in the far future.

      - The ExpressGate is not great considering its appearance, and in here the pointer is so sensitive.

      - I already knew that there is no DVD drive, but there’s no need for the manual to “show off” about the environment-protecting thing.

I’m not completely satisfied with this product, but I would recommend it, especially to college students or travellers who need to type a lot.

      Good day, everyone!

When you recieve this PC and power it up, it self installs, detects your wireless, email setup was a snap. No issues loading office 2007 or transferring documents, email and favorites from my old laptop. I definitly runs slower than my laptop with 4 GB ram. I plan to get the 2GB memory upgrade (about $50) to see if that helps the speed. My wife takes it to meetings all the time. My 14 yo daughter streams video of her favorite shows too.

I really like this small computer for traveling. The screen is small but you get used to it by scrolling and zooming. Battery does last a long time.

A review I read before buying said to buy the white one because the fingerprints on black would drive you crazy..another review said don’t buy the white because it looks like a toy. I agree that you should buy the black..it looks more professional. (there are fingerprints but better than carrying around a toy)

I also bought the Assorted Color Envelope Leather Case for acer aspire in black..which fits perfectly and looks good

Love my new little lightweight netbook
      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have never written a product review, but really counted on what others had to say about this product, so I wanted to give my (untechnical) feedback.

It is GREAT–my husband suggested a netbook, and ASUS was highly recommended to me (I think they originated them). I have had incredible trouble with my laptop which is only 3 years old from a major online company that I didn’t want any product from them.

      It is so lightweight!

I went with the black, fingerprints not that bad (I have 3 kids so this is not an issue for me) and I prefer black.

      Keyboard is fine.

Not sure battery is 11 hours, seems more like 9, but can’t be sure.

Screen is great even when not plugged in.

Takes a little getting used to use a smaller screen–I do a lot of airline bookings/searching, and tend to go back to my full size laptop when I have a lot of online research.

I did not upgrade the RAM yet as I thought I would try it out as is, and so far it seems fine.

Price–I went with the least expensive (and shopped around lots of websites) for the 250GB hard drive, and 1GB RAM. At the time it was $[...], and now they increased the price, so they could push the model with the Kindle built in. All I know is that you can download books for free without the Kindle (but not the newest ones) and can also download them to my ipod, itouch and droid phone, so this is less of an issue for me.

      Hope this helps!

We love the portability. We use this more than our other household computers. It is a little slow–they should just make it with 2g ram…

We switched from IE to Google chrome as the browser and that helped a lot.

Will invest in more ram eventually.

update after having it for 2 months, it totally quit working. i had to send it back to ASUS 3 times before it came back working consistently (would not turn on).

I love it again now that it works, but i am nervous that it will quit again. If I had to do it over, i would buy an Acer like my sister and dad did because they have had no problems.

      A GREAT LITTLE NETBOOK
      Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE-MU17 based on many reviews of many brands. It was easy to set up, and I love the keys. The smaller shift key is no problem. You got used to a large one you’ll get used to the smaller one. So far my battery has only held an 8 hour charge, but I’ve only charged it twice. I was hesitant to get a netbook, thinking I couldn’t download some of my ‘old’ favorite programs because of the lack of a CD/DVD. I didn’t want to spend another $50+ for an external hard drive. I found that I could open the program CD on my old computer and drag the program onto a flash drive (love those little things), and then open the program and download it to the ASUS netbook from there. Works great. Also, I don’t have a problem with the Windows 7 starter, it does plenty for me.

Didn’t realize that this only comes with a 60 day trial to Microsoft Office products and then you have to purchase if you want it. Just assumed that it would have it, my mistake I guess. Otherwise serves its purpose for me–which is a computer for traveling that I can still have internet access and doesn’t take up much room.
