Tech errors 2 months after purchase – Impossible to get tech support
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
To make this as short and straightforward as possible, here is the story: I purchased an ASUS EEEPC 1005PE Seashell because after doing research it seemed like a smart buy. Since I received the product, the computer would not shut down, while on battery power. I didn’t mind it, but this is annoying considering the function.
For a couple of months, it ran smooth and then out of nowhere I receive a message that says “Disk error, restart your computer.” After restarting multiple times, the same problem. I then attempt a system restore and now it is saying “No operating system.”
After reaching another tech obstacle, I spend two hours reading forums to solve the problem and there were no solutions. I then try calling tech support and after being on hold for 110 minutes, I finally got through. They would like me to send in my computer so they can reboot it for me and I can expect it back within 15-20 business days.
Only time will tell if they fix it, but this is unacceptable for a $400 netbook to have these ridiculous issues after two months of minor use.
Great little machine, Needs a better OS
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The best thing about this netbook is that its very good at being a netbook. Its small and light and it actually gives battery life close to 14hrs.
However, the biggest problem I found with this machine, was the Windows 7 Starter. The OS is just very limiting. Somehow Microsoft and Hardware manufacturers have gotten Windows 7 stripped down enough to run on netbooks, but in my experience, I feel Windows 7 Starter is still very heavy for this machine. While its usable, its not snappy or fast at all. You will be used to constantly watching the Busy mouse cursor (the rotating circle). Applications generally launch slower on this netbook. (And, there’s nothing wrong with my EEE or with my copy of windows 7 starter; I am just a mature user who expects his computers to be fast and responsive.)
Another issue I have with the OS interface is that windows 7 is not designed for the netbook. Netbooks have much smaller screens compared to standard laptops, and they need to have an interface which is designed for small screens. I found the Windows 7 taskbar annoyingly large. I could change its settings to be smaller, but it was still not functional enough and still wasted lot of precious screen space. In addition, every window has a titlebar, which further takes a lot of space. Netbooks have to have an interface, which allows for applications to run while using maximum screen space possible.
However, that doesn’t change the fact that this is a good little machine. The way I got the most out of this machine, is by installing a very light weight linux OS on it. Everything works better that way. I have a chromium browser which launches and runs very fast. Linux ran so well on it, that it was even faster and more responsive than my macbook. And the battery life was upto 11hrs on linux, which is pretty good for my use. Also, I was able to find a linux variant which is targetted for EEE netbooks, and therefore has the right UI, which uses screen space efficiently (I’m using Easy Peasy Linux previously called Ubuntu EEE. [...])
I sincerely hope, that Windows 7 (or any of its variants), discontinues being the Netbook OS or else evolves to be truly lightweight.
Netbook Review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This computer is exactly what my wife wanted. The size, ease of use, long battery life are just as advertised. We are really enjoying the computer. It is much easier to take on trips than a regular laptop.
do not buy this
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this notebook computer for my writing. Within 45 days the screen had cracked with out any trauma. I had not purchased the warranty so I was screwed. Thus, this computer is not very durable at all. In addition, when I contacted the vendor, they denied that I had even bought it from them.
Excellent Product
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am so impressed with my netbook so far. It’s lightweight and portable. I love the battery life. I can have it unattached for hours and still have plenty of battery left. My old laptop used to die in just 2 hours, but I can easily get 8 to 10 hours on this depending on the programs that I am using. Also, the keyboard feels almost normal size, so it wasn’t hard to adapt to it. Although, some of the key placement is different (Delete button for instance) so I am still working on that. I read lots of review on other netbooks and believe I made the right purchase.
Does everything I need
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this on the recommendation of a friend. I needed something small because I’m on the go a lot. I have a Clearwire travel modem so I do a lot of work on the road. But I didn’t want a big laptop. I needed something that I could slip into my bag and yet when I turned it on, it could do all that I needed it to do (i.e., run my Office programs, browse the Internet, and do email, etc).
This little netbook does everything I need and more. I did have to put it the 2gb memory that was recommended, Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory, but it was worth it so I didn’t mind the extra cost.
If a person needs to run graphic intensive programs, this netbook would be pushed to its limits and probably would fit the need of that person. But for someone like me, who really just needs the basic programs to work and doesn’t need a huge screen or high resolution, it works perfect.
The Network card seems not working

i am still trying to connect to the internet using the j45 but without a success. i have a doubt its not working.
Know What You’re Buying!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this netbook for several months now and LOVE it!
It seems strange to me that folks would complain about things like Windows 7 starter. It clearly states that this is what is on the netbook, so don’t purchase it if you want Windows 7 premium! My experience is that starter works fine and is probably perfect for this processor and memory configuration, of course you can’t change the wallpaper (who cares?). Look, this is not a laptop, it’s a NETBOOK! For web surfing, e-mail and documents, it works fantastic. I even watch YouTube videos and convert DVD files to MP4′s and watch them with no problems. All this with only the 1GB of RAM that originally came in the machine. If you want speed, then buy a laptop with a faster processor and more memory. For portability and battery life, this thing rocks!
Okay
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This netbook would get a better rating if Asus hadn’t decided to use Windows 7 Starter. This OS is almost totally useless. I imagine many buyers of this product harbor resentment as I do, against Asus after having to buy Windows 7 Home Premium to get the damn thing to work properly.
The little netbook that could
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been using this netbook for over a week now, next to my laptop.
I am more than happy with this product, can highly recommend it.
I had been looking for something small and lightweight with a good and speedy performance. No heavy apps need to be run, basically just want to get on the net, use a real keyboard, use Skype and watch a movie or two.
Yes, the cover does attach fingerprints, I don’t find this so important.
More important is performance and this is just great.
I have yet to change to the 2GB RAM, so this review is based on the 1GB RAM performance.
Startup is quick and easy, Starter Windows 7 is preinstalled. Make sure you install all the updates, this takes quite a while.
When I wanted to use Skype, I got a warning that the performance might not be enough to power a Skype call, however the call quality was fine. The warning could disappear once I upgrade to 2 RAM.
I am not entirely sure about the proclaimed 14 hrs of performance, as it says in the manual that the battery will reach its’ full performance level after several charges/discharges, and the ‘remaining time’ indicator changes depending on how many applications are running simultanously at any given time, but what I CAN say is that it runs a very long time, easily 8-10 hrs.
I find the keyboard user-friendly, only a few typos – really on a keyboard that size it could be a lot worse and I type fast. Very nice and more than I expected.
The touchpad is easy to use, no problems with that.
Sound quality also acceptable for such a little machine, also video is just fine.
Performance is quick, also no problem with that.
The only – but really the only – minus that I would give is that the keyboard is quite loud. But other than that – no probs.
Bearing in mind that a netbook cannot be compared with a full notebook, this little machine does just great and I am happy with my purchase.
The key factors for me were:
Performance: this is one of the few machines in its’ category that can be upgraded to 2GB RAM
Weight: at 3 lbs really light
Size: want to fit it into my purse. Works great.
Battery time: a proclaimed 14 hrs – yet to be verified – but definitely enough juice to last a transatlantic flight.
I recommend this netbook to anyone who wants a small, light machine with good performance with a long battery life.

light weight, user friendly and international traveller.
easy to adapt to foreign net suppliers and keep all functions.
great battery life and screen display.
delivery was very prompt as well.
It’s a Great Netbook
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Took this on a recent trip. Its size and weight made it a breeze at the airport. Used it for GPS navigation every day with only a short recharge at night. It never ran out of battery and its dual core proccesor had plenty of power for e-mail and web browsing.
first netbook, quite a disappointment
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
i purchased this netbook for my wife, but it turns out to be somewhat disappointing. first of all, it is a bit difficult to open it up. the screen and the keyboard folds like a clam shell and there is not even a locking device. the lack of such a device also makes it difficult to open because one needs to have thin fingers and long (and strong) fingernails to pull apart the screen from the keyboard.
Yet a bigger problem is with its touch pad, specifically the button (note the singular form). it has only one bar instead of the conventional two mouse buttons, so one has to push at either end of the bar, which is a bit awkward. also the bar is quite tight and requires some to press. very uncomfortable.
another problem is with the small keyboard. maybe this is what i should expect from a small netbook. the layout of the keyboard is too small for my hands and i keep hitting the wrong keys. also the touch pad is a bit sensitive, and the heat from my palm often moves the cursor to some other place, and i have to disable the touch pad when i type. it is quite inconvenient.
some of the applications that come with the computer are what i call junkware, and i had to spend quite a bit of time to remove them since they were pre-installed. also we found out that windows 7 starter edition doesn’t allow us to change the desktop background, so we are stuck with the default background, unless i upgrade it to some other edition. this is probably true to almost all netbooks, and i just want to share with someone new to netbooks.
poorly constructed keyboard

One key fell off KB the 1st week. A few more came loose after a month. ASUS Support refuse to repair for free.
A terrific, functional portable for all kinds.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Don’t kid yourself: this is not a “cheap” alternative to a laptop computer available at five times the cost. Nor is it a desktop replacement. Instead, this is a device for people who are willing to accept performance trade-offs in a laptop that is eminently totable and has (for my purposes) very long battery life. If you understand this going in, you’ll be extremely pleased with this computer!
A few notes. The display on this computer is as good as they say; crisp, bright, and fairly economical draining the battery. The WiFi performance, especially in patchy spots, is as good as any proper laptop I’ve used. The sound quality of the audio I/O (even through a decent pair of headphones) does the job, but isn’t great. The keyboard/mouse are quite usable, but it did take me a week to get used to it; the Acer line of netbooks seems to have a nicer keyboard, at least. The battery life, yow! This guy running full-bore (display at 80% brightness, max processor and WiFi performance, etc.) gives more than 8 hours of uninterrupted use. More conservative settings will easily yield 9 or more hours uptime on a charge, and you’ll get close to the advertised 14 hours if the system idles with the display off (but with WiFi running). The bluetooth capability has proven useful for making Skype calls with my wireless earpiece. I’ve found that the utility of the system is enhanced when paired with an inexpensive graphics tablet (e.g, Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet). And despite the hand-wringing about Windows 7 vs XP in other reviews, unless you’re relying on old software, you’ll be glad you sprung for Windows 7. (And I’m as stunned as anyone:) Microsoft actually did a decent enough job with 7, and the “Starter” version included with this laptop has proven able enough for my purposes without a RAM upgrade.
Despite the fact that I purchased this computer primarily for travel use, it’s become a fixture in my study, where even a larger laptop would be too cumbersome and noisy. And yet, I’m able to tote it into the field when I need to for processing nocturnal bird vocalizations using CLO Raven Pro. (Long batterty life really pays off for fieldwork.) Quite a system. Nice job, ASUS!
convenient

i bought this little laptop out of impulse, and because my old laptop’s charger stopped working
kind of upset that it didn’t come with a recovery disk
and i thought i was going to get the 500gb of web storage, but no. dont know how that works.
i dont like the fact that its window 7 starter since it is very limited
but
overall, it’s a good small convenient laptop
Not bad

I was surprised at how satisfied I have been with this little gadget. It does a lot for its size and is really portable. You have to accept that you need to scroll up and down to get the same view as with a full-sized laptop or computer, but that will be the case with any netbook. The battery life is impressive! I will probably go back and buy the accelerator that was offered. There are enough how-to videos out there to make me believe that installing the accelerator is something even I can do. As usual, Amazon service was top-notch. I’d do it again.
A Good Very Portable Laptop
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this little computer for my wife, and she loves it. With 14 hour battery ti is perfect for her.
The keyboard is nice and good enough. It comes with bluetooth, important for syncing the Nokia, sorry no iPhone for my wife.
- Windows 7 starter could be better, Windows XP on the previous Asus she had was better.

This is a very slow, but cute, computer. It is highly portable, it connects to the internet most of the time with ease and it can STORE videos/movies. Unfortunately it is missing some key components within its programming and cannot play videos. When iTunes was downloaded to the netbook it was unable to play back a video smoothly it kept skipping and hesitating through the entire movie. It failed to meet expectations and was returned.
Great PC for limited application
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I bought this netbook to be able to travel easily and have internet access, and to have a light, manageable PC for around the house. Works great for that! Plenty fast for general browsing. Very light, battery lasts a very long time – not sure if the advertised 14 hours – but probably close if not fully.
The only down sides are that 1. my fingers are not accustomed to the small keyboard and I continually miss the right shift key. 2. the mouse is taking me a bit to get used to 3. The screen is pretty small.
on point 3 though, the zoom feature from the mouse is really helpful.
Overall, certainly worth the price so far. I have been able to connect to various Wifi networks and even tether to my phone when moving. So the mobility has been great.
A good notebook.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought it as a replacement for my wife’s old Dell Latitude. Streams Netflix and the like with no problem. I like a slightly larger screen but my wife is happy with it.
Great battery life. However, it gets the great battery life by slowing the processor WAY down when not on AC power. Not a problem, just so you know.
Is someone blowing smoke about the battery life of the 1005PE?
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was enormously excited to order my ASUS netbook, the 1005PE in Blue. I did remove a couple of the included programs (the anti-virus, for exp) but noticed no actual difference in speed. I also downloaded the OpenOffice 3.0 but did discover that it was inappropriate for my needs so will go with the MicrosoftOffice Home. Otherwise, I am moving slowly in the “uninstall” mode so that I do not inadvertently dump an option. Windows 7 Starter has been a bit of a surprise as it does have some limitations but I am discovering that I can live with the perpetual view of a shoreline in the startup screen. I like the keyboard feel but I have added a wireless mouse as the touchpad is not an easy thing for me (personal, not hardware or design-connected). Oh, I should note that the netbook loves to collect fingerprints.
The biggest sadness about this netbook (and that is why it only gets a 4, or maybe a 3) is that after 3 battery charge/discharge sequences, I am lucky to get 8 hours of use prior to a recharge. The tech support at ASUS has NOT been helpful in explaining the “whys” and “what to do’s”.
If anyone has any ideas to help me I would be endlessly grateful (I bought it essentially because I needed a small, easily portable, long-life machine for some of my European trips).
