Computer Projectors: Evolution Of A Wonderful Technology

Projectors have moved a ways from the old school overhead projector. We’ve all seen those overhead projectors in use, either at the office during a display, at church for singing choruses, or at college where the teacher could show the class how to do quadratic equations without turning his / her back on potential mischief-makers.

And everybody remembers what these overhead projectors were like to use. First you had to set up a screen or find a suitable wall to use as a screen. Then you had to focus and lean the projector lenses and mirrors so that the image appeared sufficiently large, clear enough and in the right place. Then you had to put the transparencies on the overhead projector, making sure they were the correct way up and the best way round. And when you had done all this, the trouble of using an overhead projector wasn’t ‘ over. Oh no. Other problems could occur. The head on an overhead projector could slide down or lean, transparencies could blow off the screen when a person opened the door on a windy day and the transparencies might have fingerprints all over them. And if the overhead projector was used at church for choruses, the individual operation the overhead projector would necessarily drop the transparencies, get them in the wrong order or forget to switch them at the right time.

Thank goodness for state-of-the-art technology. Today’s projectors make displays and conferences a lot more attractive. No more grubby transparencies or straining your eyes to see a PowerPoint presentation on a fourteen-inch screen. From the business world to the church to the home, both front and rear projectors have become more and more common ( this writer has not seen a projector in use in the high-school setting yet, but they’re probably in some colleges ).

Front projectors work in a corresponding way to the old overhead projectors in that they project the image forward onto a screen or smooth wall using lenses to focus the image. But the data for the projector is broadcast from the source – frequently a P. C. – to the projector mechanism via electronic wires. Rear projectors look something similar to a TV. And many rear projection screens regularly are televisions. Rear projectors come in one or two base kinds, each employing a different sort of technology. CRT rear projectors use tons of tiny cathode ray tubes which work like a normal TELEVISION set. These nevertheless , are larger than the other types.

The flat screen rear projectors, which are the most popular sort of projector, include the LCD variety, that has a screen similar to that found on a calculator or digital watch but much much more sophisticated ; the DLP or DMD ( microdisplay ) variety, which uses an array of tiny mirrors, and the LCoS sort of rear projector, which uses a combination of LCD and DLP technology.

Many of those projectors are a genuine asset for the home entertainer or the serious computer gamer, as they permit either a TV, DVD or PC signal to be reproduced on a big scale, making the experience that much more vivid and exciting.
