Don’t purchase a Lenovo.. go with some other brand!!!

We purchased the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook for work. Unfortunately it never worked correctly! We had to send it back to Lenovo to be repaired and are still waiting for it to return. The idea pad looked like a great buy and something we could easily take with us on business trips and conferences. However, when we received it, nothing worked. It would turn on (you could see the on light flashing) but nothing would happen. The screen remained dark, no matter what we did! Even when plugged in, it wouldn’t work. We are very much unimpressed with our new gadget and the hassle we had in sending it back is crazy! Amazon wouldn’t refund us since we’d had it a month before trying it out. (We know better now and will immediately unbox our devices for testing instead of waiting for our next meeting to try them out!) So we had to go through Lenovo which is a total nightmare! Not only do you get the run around on the phone (we were transferred a total of 8 times before we got someone who could help us), the guy we spoke to gave us the wrong instructions for sending it back for repairs, we had to call back and speak to another representative who said they would mail us a return box to ship it back in.. which never arrived. On our third call, we got an american woman who knew what should have been done all along and emailed us the return label. We are now waiting for the repaired netbook to arrive. If we ever get the thing working, I’ll let you know how it is. But take my advise, go with a Dell. They always give you great service and never a run around.
Great Netbook

I have been using the S-10 for a couple of months now and I really like it. I purchased the computer for use mainly while traveling in my RV and it really is great. I like the light weight and long battery life. The wireless also works very well, better than on my Sony Vaio–it is very sensitive. The small right shift key is a definite mistake on the part of Lenovo, and is enough to drive me crazy. So I downloaded a freeware program called “Keytweak” and changed the up arrow to a shift key, and changed a couple of other keys. I changed the right Alt key to an “end” key. I use the end key a lot. If you buy one of these computers definitely experiment with “Keytweak.” Another thing I like about it is the lack of clutter on the hard drive. It is a pleasure to use after using Vista on my Sony. I gave that computer to my wife because she doesn’t get into all the software and use the explorer like I do, so Vistas annoying features are not apparent to her. I like the way Lenovo puts the USB drives on the opposite side of the computer. The Sony has then so close together that the cables intefere with each other.
In summary, I can’t imagine a better netbook computer. I definitely recommend the 10.2 inch screen. I really don’t feel much of a comprise when using it. Any smaller and it would be a problem.

I wanted a highly mobile machine (lightweight and long battery life), the Lenovo S10 does the trick. The built quality of this netbook is good, and this is very useful for specific situations like long trips, university, presentations, etc…
Screen resolution is 1024×600 (this is very small these days, but still ok if space is optimized) the LCD is clear and it sports Intel 945GME, 6 cell battery really saves the day, I also replaced the memory using a 2GB module (since I usually end up with a bunch of opened documents/tabs/webpages/programs), and Atom processor is slow, but it’s ok to run web browser, office, music, etc… Also the Broadcom wifi is stable.
From the bottom of the netbook the hard drive and RAM is accessible, which make you life easy if you want to upgrade those components. The keyboard and touchpad is very small (just like every other netbook, but keyboard could have been better).
I’ve been using it for a month and I’m very happy with this little machine.
NO Bluetooth…..

I’ve been researching netbooks for a few weeks now. And I had thought that the S10 would be exactly what I needed. But it is NOT. Please read on….
1) Buyers need to be aware that there is an S10e and an S10. They are different.
2) In general the S10 (not the “e” either)does NOT come with built in bluetooth.
3) I thought that he SIM card slot could be useful with my carriers data plan.
So, I went to the Lenovo site and looked up the “S” series netbooks. There’s an S10 and S10-2. And on the bottom left of the page is a link to a PDF file that contains S-series specifications. Upon looking that file over I found a model that has bluetooth. And since I was not sure if the model offered on Amazon had bluetooth or not I decided to ask their online chat (link at the top-right of the lenovo page). Here’s the conversation we had –
Jonathan Stephens: Thank you for choosing Lenovo chat. My name is Jonathan (REP ID: CZ7). How may I help you?
Customer: I have questions regarding the S10 netbooks.
Customer: This model – Lenovo IdeaPad S10-1311UBK6 is sold at Amazon. Does it have Bluetooth?
Jonathan Stephens: No it does not.
Customer: Ok, what S10 model number do I need to look for in order find one with Bluetooth?
Jonathan Stephens: None are sold with integrated Bluetooth on [...]. You can always purchase a USB bluetooth and add it externally to the system.
Customer: That won’t work for me. I was looking at the “sseries_techspecs_060409.pdf file and it calls out a model of S10 with bluetooth. Is that model sold via 3rd party retail?
Customer: Specifically, 4333-2TU.
Jonathan Stephens: Correct.
Customer: Ok, is that model sold in the USA and what would the retail model number be? Like the S10-xxxxxxxx model number.
Jonathan Stephens: I am only familiar with the models sold on [...]. You have as much information as I do about other venues.
Customer: Ok, thanks….. bye.
Bottom line, not very helpful at all. So sorry Lenovo, I won’t be buying your netbook…. The search goes on.
Pleasently Surprised

I wanted a spare laptop and the netbook seemed the way to go. The S10 is simply great. It has exceptional build quality, great screen, and has all the features I need: long battery life, VGA out, card reader, space for a modem card. The Wifi works better than my expensive laptop. Consider the Ideapad as good (or better) as the Thinkpad!
