    Great netbook for the road

I purchased this item over six months ago and am still happy with the purchase. It travels wells and has been almost trouble free. I’ve done four overseas tours and an extended motorcycle trip using it. It is great for motorcycle use. My standard laptop will not fit in any of the bags I use when riding and this one fits nicely.

I had a problem with the display recently. The screen would go completed white and it took a few taps to get the display to return to normal. Fortunately the unit is still under warranty. A short phone call to Samsung and the tech said to drop it off (sans battery and charger) at my local UPS store. A week later it was returned…. repaired… no charges…. no hassles.

    Likes:

1 – It works like a Windows computer with little other hassle.

    2 – Travels well

3 – Returns from suspend without a hitch

4 – Wifi performs with little to no hassles

    Dislikes:

1 – The touch pad window scroll control regularly gets in the way. I find myself scrolling when I just want to navigate the screen. Can I disable that feature??

2 – The charger comes with two hundred feet of wire. Well, not that much, but it is a pain to pack. I guess it was designed for the Starbucks crowd (plug in 12′ from the wall and nurse a coffee for 6 hours). A much shorter cord would be better for this traveler.

    Great warranty / support

Owned my NC10 about year now. It was shipped to me with a somewhat annoying manufacture defect (google for “nc10 lcd blotches”) I lived with it but just before the warranty ran I decided to get it fixed. The Samsung web site for opening a service request really sucked (it had bugs and did not work no matter which browser I tried to use) however there was option to chat with a service rep and they were great. Opened a ticket for me. Emailed me shipping label. I shipped my laptop in (Samsung paid both ways) and a week later got it back with LCD replaced. It is in great shape now. Very glad I went with Samsung for the warranty service. btw: The LCD defect only affected early units shipped in late 2008.

Great but with a major LCD problem
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This netbook is great, the features on it made it an instant buy for me.

It’s fast, quiet, battery lasts more than I expected, image quality is great.

My only issue with this netbook is that the LCD cable failed within two months.

I do open and close the LCD at least once a day if not more but still, it’s way too early for something like that to fail. When the cable fails you will get a white screen. Mine was doing this while I was opening and closing it, which clearly indicated a bad connection. After reading online about other people having the same issue I decided to take a look myself. I also replaced the HDD with a solid state drive which presumably voids the warranty. I didn’t even bother with warranty since I didn’t want to waste the time with samsung replacing a cable that is faulty by design.

After taking the LCD cable out I realized that the shield wire for the cable actually broke. It looks like the shield wire is used for more than just shielding. The fix was simple and I was able to do it in one evening without stress. You just have to remove the LCD cable and take the isolating tape off of it and you will expose the broken wire. I replaced the shield wire with a more flexible wire to prevent further issues. The problem is that the LCD cable is routed through the hinges in a very ugly manner and there’s not a whole lot you can do about it. I’ll post back if it fails again.

Since I had the screen apart I installed an aftermarket touch screen which makes this netbook an even greater toy.

So, while the computer is great and now works awesome, for the average user the LCD cable issue is a show stopper an something that can result in a lot of lost time. I think that’s not acceptable from a respectable brand and if you search online you will see a lot of people have had this issue.

Hope this post helps people that are having the same problem that I did.

    Thanks for reading.

    I Love This
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I got a refurbished netbook but I love how long the battery lasts. But I don’t get the normal 8 hours. Instead, I think I get about 4-6 hours on my netbook. I love the color and how slim it is. It’s not noisy and it doesn’t heat up not like my old laptop. I read all netbook reviews and decided to purchase this because of all the positive reviews that I have read. The only negative reviews I read about this was regarding the speakers. I have to agree that it does suck but I figured I can just plug in my headphones. The only problem is that I love to chat and use the webcam but I can barely see myself with low lighting and the person I am chatting with cannot even see me at all. So that’s the only thing that bothers me. But I love how easy it is to type here. Basically I love everything about this netbook except for the speakers and the lighting when using the webcam. But if you can live with it then get this netbook! It is worth it!

A great little netbook for email and web
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased this [...], when it was on sale for $325 w/ free shipping. Having read the reviews here, I wanted to contribute my own opinions, now that I have owned it for about 5 months.

    Pros:

    - great battery life

    - bright screen

    - keyboard is easy to type on, given that it is a netbook

    - quick to boot up and shutdown

    Cons:

    - small/squished touchpad area, as many users have already commented on

    - mouse button is one bar, which you press to one side for left click and the other for right click, which I don’t like

Really, the only place I can ding this is the touchpad/mouse area and built in scroll feature on the touchpad. It is certainly liveable, but I think it could have been made a bit taller. Other than that, I have been very happy with this. I have office 2003 installed, and it seems to run fine with the 1 GB of RAM. If I could get a 2GB stick for < $30.00, I would consider the upgrade, but right now, 1GB is working just fine.

    Computer good —service terrible
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars

I bought a Samsung NC10 netbook in July. It’s a very capable piece of hardware and we were very happy with it until it required service. Last week large black spots appeared on the screen. We sent it back for a warranty repair to Intelisol, which is a third party which contracts with Samsung to service their netbooks. Word came back that the screen was cracked and that this was not covered by the warranty. My choices were poor: 1. I could pay a $50 “evaluation” fee, which would be waived if I decided to proceed with the repair. Neither the the customer service rep or her supervisor would share what the cost of replacing the cracked screen. OR 2. I could have the computer returned to me at my expense.

I chose the second option. Had I taken option #1, my fear was that the repair cost could exceed the cost of the computer. Intelisol was totally non-transparent. The supervisor actually said, “How can we stay in business, if we tell the cost of the repair, before doing our “evaluation”". Clearly, they had already made the evaluation in order to determine that it wasn’t covered by warranty.

I will not buy another Samsung product solely because of this experience with Intelisol, their third party service provider.

    Nice little machine
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve been using the NC-10 for about 2 months and I must say that this little computer was really a nice aquisition for a number of reasons.

1- Well built, light weight and nice look

2- good battery life: using for internet surfing with wi-fi for around 5-6 hours

3- Really nice keyboard: good touch feeling, easy do get used, almost the desktop size.

Of course there are the two known problems: the bright outside finish that get covered by finger prints and the small touchpad. I found no solution to avoid the finger prints on the nice bright blue cover… beauty comes with a price. But the infinite scroll feature (making continuous clockwise rotation on the touchpad after using the scroll side of it) can be used to compensate its size.

This is a nice option in the 10″ netbook list. I’m really satisfied with it.

After reading nearly all 400 reviews of the Samsung NC10 I bought one for myself. I have to give credit to the previous reviewers who helped me in decisions to buy the RAM upgrade (and posted the You tube link on how to do it) and the mini-mouse to make this computer truly a joy to use. The only limitation I find with the net-book is screen size which does not lend itself to looking at large photos. That being said I will only use it for photo storage while on vacation and will continue to do all my photo editing on a 19″ Ultra Sharp screen when I return home. I find the keyboard actually easier to type with than on my other laptop. The color and finish of this net-book also makes it much more appealing. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

    Samsung NC10 – 14GB Excellent Purchase
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased the Samsung NC10 – 14GB blue netbook about a month ago and it is working perfectly. I wanted a laptop/netbook to check emails on the web, access our company admin pages, and do remote desktop connection to another computer. I have no problems. It runs fast, only 1GB of RAM and it connects automatically looking for wifi connections.

I am a power user, but in this case I didn’t need a laptop to do programming. I just wanted to check some emails, look in on my fantasy scores in real time, and do some business work using the company web site.

I am running WIndows XP home edition and it does what I need it to do. I don’t run Microsoft Office at this time. I have streamed YouTube videos with no streaming issues. The speaker is a little tinny sounding, but put on some ear buds and attach to the headphone output and it sounds fine.

I am very security conscious and am running Norton 360 after trying out the paid version of AVG. I am having no problems.

I am not a big fan of any laptop touch pads, but this one is okay, I had to change the click settings because I hit it too hard or too soft. But, I normally attach a wireless mouse with a USB jack.

Battery seems to last forever, or at least a few days. I only access this little baby about an hour a day and I only refresh the battery about once a week. It runs all afternoon and evening on Sundays as I watch football and keep an eye on the scores.

I rate it an excellent purchase.

    Great little student computer
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this computer four months ago for a return to grad school. I commute via bicycle and train, and my other laptop was too bulky and heavy to bring, so I turned to the Samsung NC-10. After several months of heavy use, I still love this little computer. It’s light, the battery just goes and goes, and it does everything I need it to while on the go.

I agree with some of the complaints about build quality. Three of the four rubber feet that keep the thing from sliding around on desks have vanished, and it does make some noise when you open it. But it hasn’t fallen apart, doesn’t feel like it’s going to any time soon, and for the price it’s a complete bargain.

    NC-10 vs. Asus 1005HA-PU1X
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought an NC-10 a few months back. I then made the mistake of allowing one of my kids to use it. After a week of wheedling, I surrendered the netbook to him, and so, was in the market for a new machine. After endless dithering I settled on a PU1X and placed the order. My observations are consequently based on the hands-on experience of a single example of each model.

I selected the PU1X over another NC-10 based on hardware variations: the Asus had the slightly faster processor (1.66 v. 1.60 Ghz.), wireless N, and marginally longer battery life. The prices of the two were virtually identical.

Out of the box, the Samsung has the better “finish”. The keyboard is “chunkier”, with a more certain touch. The overall feel of the NC-10 is closer to that of a high-end notebook than the Asus. The 1005HA is significantly noisier than the Samsung, and runs hotter.

The final deal-breaker was the bloatware on the Asus. It took significantly longer to boot and is overloaded with intrusive software that causes everything to run slower, even after pruning it back. Updating XP from the initial configuration to current took at least twice as long on the Asus, as does opening Firefox, or any other program.

The Asus goes back today; I’ll be getting another NC-10.

I have only owned this netbook for about 2 months but so far it is fantastic. i bought mine refurbished from tech for less. it runs great. webcam is sub par, the only reason i gave this 4 stars. I would totally make this purchase again. i go to a community college with a reputation for things getting stolen from vehicles. this netbook allows me to have a computer at school that i don’t have to worry about getting stolen as much as say a laptop notebook which is about double the price.

Most things you can do via usb these days and i have taken full advantage of the 3 or 4 ports available. i haven’t tried the vga output yet. my battery life is good, usually about 4 or 5 hours, watching video and everything, varies depending on what you do and how bright the screen is. Hot keys on this computer are GREAT. so easy to use. For example if i hold down the Fn button and press say the up arrow on the keyboard, it turns up my volume, everything is well labeled and well placed. I have also had problems playing video in HD from youtube. however its not to bad playing fairly memory intensive .mkv files which are high quality video files. internet has been great, i have used IE, chrome and firefox. i use iTunes and zune, no problems there. i also installed microsoft office 2007 without a hitch as well as [...]. both work great. i use a program called dameon tools to trick the computer into thinking there is a cd drive and mounting an .iso file to play certain games, i played starcraft and it worked great. i used an 1TB external hard drive with it, no problems. so far everything has been dandy.

also suggestions i have is to download a program called dropbox which allows you to store 2GB worth of stuff free and allows for easy transfer of files to netbook, its been awesome for me so far.

I just love this tiny computer to death!

    Pros:

    - The keyboard is not crammed like some other netbooks. Even though it takes a while to get used to having the PageUp/Down button the same as Home/End button, it’s actually very convenient once you’re used to it.

    - Battery life is long.

    - Light and very good for college students who take notes on their computers.

    - Looks very cute :)

    Cons:

    - The touchpad is a little small so scrolling using the touchpad is hard.

    - Wireless does not work sometimes, but very well most of the time.

    Poor Quality, Poor Service
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased Samsung NC10 with an expectation that I was getting a stripped down version of a laptop. Unfortunately, Samsung appears to be also using low quality parts. Two weeks after I recevied it, the screen went white. Apparently it is a common problem with this model (Google “Samsung NC10 white screen”). When I called customer service, I was given a runaround – advice to reinstall …, then was told that a ribbon cable will be mailed to me within 2 weeks to replace it by myself (after ~6 weeks I got a POWER CABLE in the mail). WhenI called again after 3 weeks, I was told that they do not ship ribbon cables and that I had to send the netbook to Samsung for service. That was a while ago and they still have it. Confirmation email said that repair was going to take 5 working days (“Your product should be ship back to you within 5 business days.” – their grammar}. I called after 9. First representative told me that they were waiting for the part (I guess a lot of warranty repairs). When I finally (a bit of a runaround again) got to talk to the repair department, they refused to provide any information other than “it is being evaluated” and were rather anoyed that I was calling so soon (“We had it for only 11 days and only 7 working days” – it was actually 13 and 9).

For the limited amount of time I was able to use it, it was what I expected. Small screen is difficult to read at times, usefull battery life is ~3-4 hours. One can get a longer battery life, but the tradeoff is a very dark screen and, as it is small to start with, it is difficult to read. Touch pad is of low quality and inferior to those comonly found in ordinary laptops (I use Dell and Fujitsu).

Overall, poor quality was bad enough, but with service this bad, I won’t be buying anyting from Samsung in the foreable future.

    Lightweight travel netbook
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This netbook has the feel of quality. It is light weight, and is a lot more convenient for traveling than a regular sized laptop. I sometimes get frustrated with the screen because it doesn’t always display what you would see on a full-sized screen – an inch or so of the bottom is missing. When using Photoshop and trying to print, the place to click on “Print” is just about off-screen, and you cannot see where to click to print. Unless they are on the road with this PC, most of the people I know have attached a larger screen to this PC and then you can see all of the display. Even if it was distorted/compressed, I wish there was a way to see all of the screen sometimes for those programs that have function selections near the bottom of the screen. When I am traveling and just reading email, the machine works okay, but to me, it’s a little too sensitive and I sometimes find I an doing a couple of actions because I’ve tapped the little mouse pad too much or something, and I can’t find how to desensitize the mouse pad. I try to use an external mouse whenever I can, and that helps my operations a lot. Without the external mouse, I have to be really careful or I am moving folders and files when I only try to open a file. Overall, this is a good traveling companion, but a little too temperamental for concentrated work.

    The Best Little Laptop Ever!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this teeny tiny laptop from AMAZON.com about seven months ago with OFC XP as I was fed up with WINDOWS VISTA and the continuous crashes my 64bit VISTA Ultimate was having on my Gateway laptop. This allowed me to keep the laptop for industrial strength work, and the wee one for travel, restaurants and email on the fly.

In a moment of inspiration I sold the NC-10 to a friend who is becoming computer literate for the first time and needed an affordable user friendly machine. I miss it a lot, so expect to replace it with either a new SAMSUNG (or the HP 311 which can handle 3 gig of mem, only for reasons of compatibility to interwork with my HP desktop and storage devices).

This is a strong recommendation to buy the SAMSUNG and a cheap 2 gig chip- very easy to install so don’t be intimidated. There is a little trap door like window on the underbelly of the machine, open it, snap out the old chip and install the new… it is a 5 minute procedure you will find is as easy as putting batteries in a flashlight.

I purchased this netbook together with the 2G memory upgrade (Crucial 2GB 667 Mhz CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory) and the carrying case (Case Logic LNEO-10 Ultraportable Neoprene Notebook Sleeve (Black)). My primary purpose was to use this when I travel and I recently took it to England and France. It fits perfectly on an airplane fold-down table and I was able to pack it in an outside pocket of a carry-on backpack. While I needed a plug adapter for overseas use, I didn’t need a voltage transformer since this netbook can handle the voltages both here and in Europe.

The memory upgrade was very easy and worked without a hitch and I was able to use all the same programs I do with my desktop. I’m not a gamer so I can’t comment on its gaming performance, but with typical word processing, email and internet use, this computer was very capable. I had no problem with the wireless g but, for range purposes, I wish it had wireless-n. I will probably try the Trendnet mini wireless n adapter [...].

Battery life was much better than I expected. I didn’t time it, but it was in excess of 6 hours.

The case fits perfectly and is protective from a dust/debris standpoint, but don’t expect to be able to drop the computer and have this case save you.

I did turn-off some of the automatic settings with respect to the touch-pad inasmuch as the default settings were causing windows to open/close in a manner which I didn’t intend.

So far, I am very pleased with this purchase and with the quick and efficient service I received when I ordered it through Amazon.

This is a great little computer. It does everything that I want and is small and light weight. I was fearful that I would not like the smaller screen because I use my computer to watch tv shows and movies, but the clarity makes up for its small size. The keyboard is a bit smaller than standard, but I find it very easy to use. The battery is what they promised, at least 6 hours with watching videos. I was able to add and external dvd/cd player, my fax/scanner/printer and some other software and had no problem with compatability. I recieved the computer when it was promised and had it up and running in minutes. I have not used the cam or bluetooth but they seem to be user friendly. I just love this computer and think it is very well priced and is very cute.

Just What I Expected And More
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Well I have worked around computers for a while mostly desktop being a computer technician and I have always liked the portability factor of a laptop but dislike the size in the sense of how much space it takes up and the attention it attracts so this was perfect for me. I was expecting it to be portable but it was much more that I expected since I only had pictures and measurements to compare it to its light and can even slip into my documents carrier without becoming a burden, at first sight and use one would think they keyboard would be an issue especially to people who are use to desktop keyboards but that also is not the case it is nicely compact and it just adapts to your hands or perhaps I adapted to it without even realizing and me not noticing to me thats a good thing, the battery life is good I can easily get 5 hours out of it regardless of what I may be doing and I’m using the stock battery so with the higher cell batteries I should be able to get much more out of it. Since its a Netbook and the resources are basically what you see is what you get I think that Samsung should have provided an option to purchase it with one of the Linux distributions e.g. Ubuntu I think that it would have utilized its little resources much better thus operations would still be fast even when additional load (software & data) starts to take up space on the hard drive but I think the memory is upgradeable so that should help out.

This is a fantastic netbook. The battery life is incredible. Wish my laptop had half the battery life. Screen is great, keyboard is perfect. Wireless modem is very strong. Boots up fast. However, definitely get the 2GB RAM to make it run faster. If you are running an anti-virus such as McAfee, things can be a bit slow until all the downloads, etc. are complete. Adding the RAM really helps.

    Pros:

    - Design. It has a sleek look. Its small size and light weight makes it very easy to carry everywhere.

    - Bettery life. I was able to get 6 hours of work out of it.

    - Keyboard. The feel is great and there is no flex.

    - Versatility. When I am just doing word processing and simple browsing, I shift it into Silent Mode so the fan doesn’t kick in, and I conserve battery power. When I want to play a Flash video, I’ll shift it into Performance Mode to get smooth playback. I like having these options.

    - Compatibility. I am able to run different operating systems easily. So it’s not just limited to Windows.

    Cons:

    - Trackpad. I’ve gotten used to it, but still must admit it’s a bit small.

    - Resolution. Like most other netbooks, this unit offers only 1024 x 600 resolution. That’s really not enough.

Obviously this wont’ replace your VIAO but for about $320 this is a great little tool.

my only complaint is that the right-side of the mousepad had a strip on it that increases the font size. my fat fingers hit this strip all the time so the size of the font on the screen changes which is very frustrating.

I really enjoy using this computer. It’s fast. It’s small and light. It’s definitely less expensive than my IBM Thinkpad. Unfortunately, my netbook wouldn’t stay charged about four months after I purchased it. I called Samsung and had the battery serviced. They have a convenient UPS drop off service which takes care of everything for you. I handed them my netbook and received a confirmation and tracking number. The netbook was returned within five days and everything worked perfectly until six months later when I turned on the netbook and found a thin purple line running (which was annoying) from the top of the screen down to the bottom. They think it’s the video card this time. Luckily the computer is still under the manufacturer’s warranty. I called customer service and arranged to send my computer in. Again! I don’t even want to think about what will happen if something else goes wrong after my warranty expires. I’m already looking into another netbook from another company – just in case. I hope not all netbooks are created for short term use. Despite my problems with the netbook, I have to say that Samsung’s customer service is excellent. I was able to reach a live person immediately each time. They kept me informed of my repair’s progress through e-mail. My netbook was sent back to me within a shorter time than expected. I wish all companies were like this.
